Toasted Black Sesame Frozen Yoghurt
In my mind, hot summer days always call for deliciously cooling treats like ice cream and frozen yoghurts. So I dust off my ice cream maker and clear a permanent space for it in the freezer. Well permanent until sometime well into the autumn.
Then I get creative with frozen yogurt combinations. Mini chefs definitely have their own ideas too which somehow always seem to involve raspberry. This year I was determined to beat all my previous frozen yoghurt creations.
I literally went into the pantry and looked though all the things that I would not automatically pair with cool sweet treats. And there they were – those rather loveable black sesame seeds. OH had a rather incredulous looks on his face when he saw ingredients on the counter top.
This is a pretty simple recipe actually with only 3 ingredients. Crushed toasted black sesame seeds, a dribble of honey and good Greek yoghurt like Total Greek – throw them in an ice cream maker, and sit back and watch as this deliciously different toasted black sesame yoghurt comes out.
OH’s verdict – I would eat this again – high praise. Should I add in lemon. Nope. Should I add in more honey, nope Bintu, I would leave it exactly as is.
So I left it as it and I love it.

Toasted Black Sesame Frozen Yoghurt
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp black sesame seeds
- 500 g Greek yoghurt
- 2 tsp honey or more for a sweeter treat
Instructions
- Toast the sesame seeds for about 3 mins on medium heat.
- Transfer seeds to a pestle and mortar and grind until they form a paste.
- The smoother the paste the smoother the texture of the frozen yoghurt will be - so you might want to spend a bit of time getting a smooth paste.
- Mix the sesame paste with all the other ingredients and chill for a few hours.
- Pour mix into your ice cream maker and follow your machines instructions.
- Eat immediately or freeze for later.
Notes
Toasted Black Sesame Frozen Yoghurt Tips
- Since I used a very thick strained Greek yoghurt it only took 10 mins in my ice cream maker.
- Mine was a very thick mixture that I could not pour in through the funnel of the ice cream maker. I had to open up the machine and add in the mix before pressing go.
- You can add in a tsp or 2 of tahini if you want a stronger sesame taste.
- You can buy black sesame paste in Asian shops. I reckon you should substitute in about 2 tbsp paste instead of 3 tbsp seeds.

I love black sesame ice cream but haven’t been able to get it in ages due to COVID, so I I just tried this recipe at home for the first time. It is AMAZING! It brought a smile to my face and completely made my day. I used a high-protein skyr because I didn’t have greek yogurt, but it still worked perfectly. I honesty think I like this better than the black sesame ice cream from the ice cream shops! So in love with this recipe. I’ll be making this all the time now!
I just gave the recipe a try as I just got an ice cream maker. Tho, I used 4 tbsp black sesame seeds and 4 tsp of maple syrup to it… it’s refreshing for my taste, tho it is still quite sour as plain Greek yoghurt like. The black sesame taste is not strong (perhaps I should try make it from seeds myself) and definitely not sweet enough for my hubby’s taste. Nevertheless, it’s a simple and creative recipe to improvise upon! Thanks!
I love that this recipe uses just a little honey and I bet that those sesame seeds offer great texture as well as looking absolutely gorgeous! x
Hello. The photo on Tastespotting led me here. I love black sesame. I just had black sesame ice cream last night, but haven’t tried the frozen yogurt version. Yum.
Thanks for dropping by Miss Kim. I have black sesame frozen ice cream on my to do list too.
This is a stunning photo Bintu and such a lovely creation. I love black sesames with ice cream and very happy that you have introduced me to a healthier version of this delicious treat!
I wonder how many other treats we can put black sesame in?
I never ever would have thought of putting those in there! Really different, I look forward to finding out what other flavours you come up with!
Thanks Stephanie – I am already doing the pantry walk again for inspiration.
Totally neglected my ice cream machine for years. I am inspired by this simple but ingenious recipe, have all the ingredients in the fridge. Now all I need is to dust off the machine and stick it in the freezer overnight. This will be dessert this weekend, for sure. Do you know how to make the sun shine?
I will have a word with the sun Madeleine.
Ohhhhh lovely! This is something I’d like to try. I’ve never seen this before.
It is really good fun to make and eat Hollie.
Your the second blogger I have seen doing this flavour this week and it really sounds interesting, may have to try it!
Two Hearts One Roof
Great minds aye???
What a fab idea! The seeds will give it a bit of texture!
Both texture and a lovely taste.
So want to tuck into this ice-cream now. Your photos are just fab. I have a packet of black sesame seeds sitting in the cupboard and I’ve not known what to do with them – until now!
Let me know how it goes. I am already thinking of the next dessert I can add them in.
I have never had sesame seeds in ice cream or frozen yoghurt before, but it definitely something I am going to try now.
It is worth it if you love the two things together Dannii.
This looks lovely, would definitely like to make i like cooking so why not. x
Perfect especially as not much cooking is involved.
This sounds so delicious. I wish I had an icecream maker. Maybe I could beat it by hand. But then again – no. Too hard.
It is super nice. It is easy to make so I think that you prob could try and beat it by hand.
Just had to update my virus protection, so this is my 3rd attempt, but at least all the spam ads are gone. Love this ice cream and feeling a little sad that I gave my ice cream maker away (no room in new freezer).
Thanks for persisting Jacqueline. I hope you get to try this.
How very original Bintu, looks and sounds totally deliciously delightful!. I’ve so got to try this, I know I’d LOVE it. Well done you, clever lady.
I am pretty chuffed with this one Lou.
