Last year I organised a lot of girly (and one dude) get-togethers in Convent Garden. The two of the girls left and these meetups rather petered out. But I really missed the vibe and people watching in Convent Garden and have been meaning to go back.
So I jumped at the chance to check out the restaurant 21 Convent Garden, right at the edge of the market and over looking the convent garden square. I loved energy of Convent Garden and it was fun weaving through the buzzing crowd as they sat watching one of the performers.
Now 21 Convent Garden is rather higgledy piggeldy and spread out – with seating out in the piazza, down a cosy basement and one floor up with better views of the market and piazza. So something to suit every requirement. Plus they have got a very beautiful and calming fish tank.
My companion and I settled in the basement and worked our way through a few cocktails including a lovely mango bellini and an Il Bosco as we decided what to eat. They had a good range of starters, some sharing platters as well as a mixture of pizza and pasta. They also have a pre theater menu for those patrons waiting to catch a show in the area.
I had the rather tasty and generous crostini selection to start as my dining companion was suitably impressed with her Gorgonzola, pumpkin and sage stuffed arancini.
My friend liked her main course of Cornish crab linguini with garlic, lime, chilli and coriander. My main was the wild mushroom ravioli with a roasted tomatoes, parsley, basil and pecorino. The taste of the mushrooms really came through along with the sweet roasted tomato sauce. These courses along with the side salad portions were so generous that we were too full to eat dessert.
But we ordered two desserts to share. Blame it on the fish tank – it was so peaceful that we needed to sit near it for a little bit longer. The cannoli came stuffed generously with mascaporne and chocolate but the shell was not as light and flaky as it should have been. But the white chocolate banana tiramisu more than made up for it. It was decadent yet not to sweet which is exactly what I like in a dessert.
The service was great and the waiter was attentive in the right way – everything was served with a smile. 21 Convent Garden is a good place to hang out in central London as it is reasonably priced and offers your fantastic people watching opportunity as you down fabulous cocktails whilst you eat. Check it out when you are next in the area.
