How To Make Plantain Chips On Stovetop

  1. Peel the plantain, and slice thinly with a knife or mandolin.
  2. Transfer the chips into a mixing bowl and season with salt and any desired seasonings.
  3. Heat oil in a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
  4. Fry the plantains in batches until they are golden on one side then turn them over and fry the other side (about 5 minutes in total). Avoid overcrowding the pan. Note that the second side cooks much quicker than the first side.
  5. Remove from the oil with a slotted spoon, transfer the fried plantains to a plate lined with kitchen paper towels to drain excess oil.
  6. Continue until all are done, and allow to cool completely before serving.

How To Bake Plantain Chips

  2. Mix sliced plantain with salt, oil, and any seasoning and transfer sliced plantains on the sheet.
  3. Bake 18-22 minutes or until golden, turning halfway through.
  4. Let cool before serving.

Recipe Tips

Here are a few tips to help you cook these easily:

  • Use a mandoline or sharp knife to slice the chips.
  • Cut the chips to the same width so that they cook at the same rate.
  • It is easy for these to go from cooked to burnt, so watch very carefully towards the end of their cooking time.
  • Let them cool before serving as they crisp up more as they cool.
  • Use the oil you have on hand. If not following the Whole30 plan, you can fry plantains using vegetable oil or sunflower seed oil.
  • You might need to reduce the heat on the oil after turning the chips, as the second side cooks much quicker than the first.

Seasonings

Options are endless with seasonings. Just a little bit of salt is one of my favorite ways to snack on my plantain chips. But you can also;

  • Change up the salt : homemade stone house seasoning  {best easy tasty seasoning you can make ever), Himalayan salt.
  • Vary spices : ground cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, paprika.
  • Add heat : use cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes
  • Make them sweeter : melted chocolate, cinnamon sugar.
  • Use citrus : Lemon or lime zest,

FAQ’s

This depends on the cooking method. Baked plantain chips and air fried ones are definitely much healthier than the fried version.

How To Peel Plantains And Cut them

  • How to peel plantains the right way: on a cutting board, use a sharp knife to cut off each end.
  • Next, while firmly holding the plantain, slit the peel lengthwise with the tip of your knife along each seam. (Only go as deep as the peel.)
  • Carefully remove each section of the peel and voila — you have a peeled plantain. Now you can tell all your friends how to peel plantains.

What Is The Difference Between Plantains and Bananas

Plantain is a starchy fruit that’s part of the banana family but it isn’t quite like a banana. Typically, you wouldn’t eat it raw because the plantain is starchier and is not as sweet as a banana. Their skins are also much thicker than bananas. You would need to cook plantains before you eat them.

Bananas are less starchy. You can eat bananas uncooked as long as they are ripe, although you can cook them too if you prefer.
