Why Make This Recipe

  • Perfect Any Time – Homemade apple pie is often reserved for the holidays, but air fryer apple pies are so easy to make you can enjoy them all year round.
  • Quick – Using storebought pie crust and cooking in the air fryer speeds up this recipe. You can make it in air fryer in half the time of traditional apple pie recipes.
  • Flavorful – The cinnamon sugar mixture is a simple but ideal combination with the apples for a flavorful, juicy apple filling.
  • Easy – If you love easy recipes, it doesn’t get much easier than this!

Ingredient Notes

  • Apples – I like to use tart apples such as green Granny Smith apples but feel free to use your favorite variety.
  • Brown Sugar – Brown sugar has a warm molasses flavor, so I prefer it over white sugar.
  • Cinnamon – Nothing goes together better than apples and cinnamon.  You can also use an apple pie seasoning blend.
  • Pie Crust – Use a store-bought pie crust or prepare your favorite homemade pie crust recipe.

Bintu’s Tips

  • Be sure to select a pie pan that fits your air fryer. I used an 8-inch pie pan.
  • This recipe uses store-bought pie crust, but you can make homemade pie crust.
  • If the pie crust circle has creases, gently roll out a lightly floured surface with a rolling pin.
  • Cut the apples just before you prepare the filling to prevent browning.
  • Feel free to cut apple chunks or slices.
  • When you toss the apples with the cinnamon and sugar mixture, add a splash of lemon juice to prevent the apples from browning.
  • You can prepare the apple mixture in advance and refrigerate it until you are ready to bake.
  • Brush the top pie crust with melted butter or use an egg wash for an extra golden crust.
  • Cut a few slits into the top of the crust before air frying.
  • If you have small pie pans, you can follow this same recipe to make mini pies.
  • Place a small circle of parchment paper below the pie plate in the air fryer basket to catch any bubble over that may occur while you bake the air fryer apple pie.
  • Air fryers all function differently, so the baking time for your air fryer should be used as a guide. Monitor and adjust based on your air fryer.
  • Serve warm, topped with powdered sugar, whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream.

Delicious Variations

  • Swap The Apples – Use your favorite apples or premade apple pie filling.
  • Add Cheese – Place a few slices of sharp cheddar cheese between the apple filling and the top crust. It adds a beautiful and unexpected flavor.

Prep And Storage

  • Make Ahead – You can cook the filling up to several days in advance.
  • Store – Cover leftover pie with plastic wrap and store in the fridge for up to a week.
  • Freeze – Airfryer Apple pie can be frozen before or after air frying. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge.

FAQs

What Type of Apples Are Best For Apple Pie?

Tart apples, such as Granny Smith apples, tend to work better for apple pie. They will not be overly sweet, nor will they become mushy or put off excess liquid. You can certainly use any variety of apple you prefer.

Can I Use Homemade Pie Crust?

We love the convenience of storebought pie crust but feel free to make homemade pie crust if you prefer.

Can I Use Canned Apple Pie Filling?

While I prefer to make the filling, canned apple pie filling is an easy substitute that will further reduce prep time. I often have a few cans in my pantry for use in my favorite recipes.

Can I Make Air Fryer Apple Hand Pies?

To make hand pie, fill pie crust circles with a small amount of filling, fold, and seal. Air fry at 380 degrees F / 190 degrees C for 10 minutes, flip, and cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes or until golden.
