If you have ever grilled brats or cooked them in a pan, you know it’s a tricky process. The outside is often overdone or burned, and the middle still hasn’t reached a safe temperature. It’s frustrating, to say the least.

This low carb meal is one of my favorites, so I needed to find a way to enjoy absolutely delicious bratwurst without all the hassle. Enter brats in the air fryer!

Easy Air Fryer Brats

Like Air Fryer Sausages, the best Air fryer Brats are a tasty meal achievable even on busy nights.

Add some pepper and onions, eat them as is, or toast up some buns and pile them high with meat and veggies and serve with Air Fryer Potato Wedges and this Air Fried Corn on The Cob

Or whip up some Air Fryer Hot Dogs or Juicy Air Fryer Burgers instead.

Kids love this perfectly cooked meal and don’t even realize we’re making healthy choices when this is served without excess grease.

Plus, it’s easy to make a few batches and feed a crowd if the kid’s friends show up for dinner.

Why You’ll Love This

  • Low Carb – Add a bun if carbs aren’t a concern, but these bratwursts with onions and peppers are a tasty and filling meal on their own.
  • No need to grill – This is like grilled brats but much easier.
  • No-Fuss – Start the air fryer and walk away. No need to babysit these air fryer brats.
  • Feeds a Crowd – Feed your family and your friends by cooking in batches. This also makes a great party meal.
  • Dietary – as long as you use the right type (eg not beer brats) this recipe can be suitable for Low Carb and keto diets

Ingredient Notes

You only need a few ingredients to make these.

  • Bratwurst – Use regular bratwurst sausages. These have been typically seasoned but you can look for flavors like beer brats. Do remove the plastic wrap before air frying.
  • Bell Peppers – Use your favorite color of bell pepper.
  • Red Onion – The color of red onion is nice for this recipe but feel free to use yellow or white onion if that’s what you have on hand.

Note: Always check for doneness with a meat thermometer. The internal temperature should be at least 160F when inserted into the bratwurst.

Recipe Tips For

  • Cut the peppers and onions into similar-sized pieces to allow for even cooking.
  • When cooking brats, turn them halfway through as you air fry them.
  • Do not over crowd the air fryer so that the hot air can circulate and the brats cook evenly.
  • Check for doneness with a meat thermometer. Brats should reach a temperature of at least 160 F / 71 C.

Plus…..

  • Be careful when inserting the thermometer probe into the meat, which sometimes causes the juices to spurt out.
  • Cook time can vary depending on the air fryer model.
  • While the air fried brats rest, feel free to toast the bread for 2 minutes or until golden.

Variations

  • Bun or No Bun – Air Fryer Bratwurst with onions and peppers is delicious as a stand-alone meal, but you can make it even more filling by putting it on a bun or in a pita.
  • Add Cheese – These brats are full of flavor but adding cheese makes them creamy and delicious.
  • Make it Spicy – Slice up a poblano or jalapeno pepper to cook along with the brats to add a bit of heat.
  • Make it Italian – Swap the fully cooked brats for Italian sausages and add a bit of sauce.

  • Freeze – Freeze uncooked brats until you are ready to cook them, and they will keep for about 6 months.

FAQs

Can I Cook Frozen Brats In Air Fryer?

Yes! If you want to cook frozen brats, just add 2-3 minutes to the cooking time and check for doneness with a meat thermometer.

Can I Toast The Buns In The Airfryer?

Absolutely! Cook brats in air fryer, and while they rest, you can toast the buns. Kick the temperature up to 400F / 200C and add the buns.

Toast them for 2-3 minutes or until they begin to brown on the outside. Add your bratwurst and peppers and onions, and enjoy.

Are Brats Gluten Free?

Bratwurst is low carb and often gluten free but it’s always important to check the packages. Brats with beer or certain flavored brats may not be gluten free.

How To Prevent Your Air Fryer From Smoking?

When cooking greasy or fatty foods, adding water to the drawer underneath the air fryer basket helps prevent the resulting grease and all the fat drippings from smoking.

You certainly don’t want smoke around if you can’t help it.

Another thing you can do to prevent smoking is wipe out the grease from your air fryer drip tray basket before you cook up a second batch of sausage.

I find the tips helpful when cooking bacon in air fryer, sausage and other fattier cuts of meat. If for any reason your air fryer starts smoking, please stop cooking and switch it off.
