You know what? Air Fryer Fried Pickles turned my snack game upside down. I went from eating them only in restaurants, to it can never be a fun family gathering, game day, movie night, without my easy snack or appetizer or side dish, aka fried pickles at our house!

I love that they come out of the air fryer, golden, crispy, a little salty and a little tangy. All the good flavor and the best bit ….. the empty every time plate. They are great with super crispy Air Fryer Chickpeas, these Air Fryer Appetizers and paired with an Air Fryer Burger.

Why Make This Air Fryer Fried Pickles Recipe

So I’m all about easy food, fun food and this right here is it.

  • Ready in about 15 minutes, so my kinda delicious snack without the wait.
  • Perfectly crispy, yet juicy without deep frying (no guilt here).
  • Made with budget-friendly pantry basics and the perfect crowd-pleaser

Ingredient Notes

This is fairly easy to pull together. But I have some notes and variations for you.

  • Pickles: I prefer dill pickles but also use bread and butter pickles. Try either and see what you like. For an easier life, I go for chips as they cook faster and crisp up easier. Feel free to start with whole pickles, that you slice yourself. You can use spears which are juicier, but since these are chunkier, they will need more cook time.
  • Buttermilk: You can use store-bought or this homemade version. Feel free to use a beaten egg mixture as a binder instead.
  • Breadcrumbs: I think panko bread crumbs give the best golden crunch. Regular breadcrumbs / seasoned breadcrumbs are fine too. For a low carb version, use almond flour for the flour mixture for coating. Feel free to use seasoned all purpose flour to make these instead of breadcrumbs.
  • Parmesan: Use freshly, finely grated Parmesan as it sticks to the pickles the best.
  • Seasonings: I add flavor with dried oregano, smoked paprika, garlic powder and a dash of Franks hot sauce (optional). Creole or Italian seasoning is a great alternative.

How To Make Fried Pickles In The Air Fryer

No overthinking, just pretty easy simple steps. And get a complete ingredients list and instructions from the recipe card below.

  1. Preheat the Air Fryer to 400 degrees F / 200 degrees C.
  2. Drain dill pickle slices, pat dry with a paper towel so excess moisture is absorbed, making it easier for breading to stick to the pickles and for pickles to crisp up.
  3. Put the buttermilk in a shallow bowl and combine bread crumbs, cheese, and seasonings in another bowl.
  4. Working quickly, dip pickles in buttermilk mix, shake to drip off excess buttermilk, dredge both sides of the pickle in the seasoned bread crumbs mixture and then add coated pickle slices to the air fryer basket.
  5. Keep working quickly to fill the basket in a single layer, lightly spray with cooking oil, (which helps the breadcrumbs crisp up and turn golden) then insert the basket into the Air Fryer and air fry for 8-10 minutes.
  6. Repeat by breading the rest of the pickles and frying in batches until finished.
  7. Serve your fried pickles warm or they’ll get soggy if you wait to enjoy them.

Bintu’s Expert Tips

Although quick to make, I have a few tips that make a big difference.

  • I suggest splitting your seasoned breadcrumb mixture into 2 bowls. Your first bowl of seasonings may start to clump together and get soggy from the dredging of buttermilk-coated pickles. Having a second bowl ready to go will help.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Cook in a single layer, allowing the hot air to circulate and crisp up the food. You may need to cook these in 2-3 batches.
  • Keep slices the same size so they cook at an even rate.
  • Use shallow bowls to dredge the pickle chips in.
  • Air fryer temperatures can vary depending on the make and model, so it is important always to check your food for doneness and adjust the time.

Storage

Leftovers. Are leftover pickles even a thing?

  • Store: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Freeze: You can freeze these, but the texture changes, so I don’t recommend it.
  • Reheat: In the air fryer at 400 degrees F / 200 degrees C for 2 to 3 minutes. It will take longer in the oven, or quicker in the microwave but will be soggy.

Notes

  • You may need to do this in 2-3 batches depending on the size of your Air Fryer.
