French Fries’s Ingredient notes

  • Frozen french fries – This recipe uses thin-cut, store-bought frozen french fries that have not been thawed. They have been cooked straight from frozen. Note that frozen fries are usually partly cooked already and coated in a bit of oil. So, the recipe would be different if you used homemade frozen fries.
  • Optional toppings – There are so many toppings, so choose your favorite. Here are some of ours:
    • Fry Sauce and condiments: good ol ketchup, cheese sauce, ranch dressing, and BBQ sauce. But you can choose your favorite.
    • Spices and seasonings: ground black pepper, kosher salt, chili powder, cajun seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, or seasoned salt. I love salty fries!

  3. Cook for 11 – 12 minutes, gently tossing them in the basket twice during cooking.

Top Tips For Cooking Frozen Fries

  • Preheat your Air Fryer before cooking for the best results.
  • For the best results when making frozen fries, do not overcrowd the air fryer basket so that the hot air circulates well and the fries crisp up. This will ensure they cook evenly. A single layer is preferred, but if you can’t, remember to shake the basket twice during the cooking time.
  • If your air fryer is small, you may need to cook these in two batches.
  • No spray oil, olive oil, or any extra oil is needed for this recipe.
  • Gently toss the fries during cooking for crispness. But if you prefer, you can use a spatula to toss them. Do it gently so they don’t break.
  • If you want your fries to be the crispiest fries, cook them for a few minutes more.
  • Make sure you choose gluten free frozen fries if you are gluten free.
  • Use cook mode if you want to, but I prefer using the manual mode to air fry as I have fine-tuned the temperature and time settings to my preferences.
  • Want more tips? Then check out these Air Fryer Tips to help you use your Air Fryer better.
  • Air fryer temperatures can vary depending on the make and model. I recommend starting with less cook time, checking for doneness, then adding more time as needed for this air fryer side dish.

Flavor Variations For Air Fryer Frozen French Fries

There are so many ways for you to flavor these air fryer french fries before serving. You can use:

  • Different sauces and condiments
  • Cheese and cheese mixtures
  • Add vegetables and greens – a good way to get the family to eat their greens!
  • Protein and meats
  • Sweet toppings
  • Different spices and seasonings

Some suggestions are to air fry your fries with garlic powder salt, dried oregano, seasoning salt, chipotle powder, grated parmesan, and chopped herbs. If you want to go all-out decadent, melt some cheese or use cheese sauce.

It doesn’t only start with the flavor variations. You can also use different vegetables like sweet potatoes for air fryer sweet potato fries.

Prep And Storage

  • Don’t make ahead – The air fryer frozen french fries will lose their crispness as they cool down, so I don’t recommend making these ahead of time. Cook and serve immediately.
  • Storage – Leftovers can be refrigerated for 2-3 days and then reheated.
  • Reheat – Fries in the air fryer can be reheated for 3-4 minutes at 350 degrees F / 180 degrees C. Do toss a couple of times during cooking to make the fries crispy.
  • Don’t Freeze – I don’t recommend freezing the air fryer fries again.

Cooking Air Fryer Frozen French Fries Time

French fries cooking times depend entirely on the size of the different types of fries and the temperature. Based on a 400 degrees F / 200 degrees C temperature, you should cook.

  • Thin-cut regular fries (about a quarter-inch thick) air fry for 12 minutes.
  • Regular cut fries air fry for 15-16 minutes.
  • Shoestring, waffle, and curly fries need about 15-20 minutes of cooking time.
  • Thicker fries, like steak fries or wedges, will need more cooking, about 20-25 minutes.
  • Sweet potato fries need more cooking time, about 18-25 minutes.

Remember that these cooking times are approximate and can vary based on the specific brand of fries, your air fryer’s performance, and your desired level of crispiness. Always consult the packaging and your air fryer’s manual for more precise guidelines.

FAQ’s For Fries In The Air Fryer

How Do You Make Sure The Fries Are Crispy?

To make sure the fries are crispy, don’t overcrowd the basket. It’s important that you rotate the fries during cooking. I recommend rotating them at least 2 times for thin-cut fries and 3 times for regular-cut.

How Long To Cook Frozen French Fries In The Air Fryer?

Frozen French fries can take about 15 to 20 minutes to cook in an air fryer. Start with 12 minutes for thin cut and then check for your desired level of crispiness.

If they need more time, continue cooking in 5-minute increments until they’re golden brown and crispy to your liking.

What Air Fryer Temp Do You Cook French Fries In?

The recommended air fryer temp to cook frozen French fries is typically between 360 degrees F / 180 degrees C and 375 degrees F / 190 degrees C.

For this recipe, we use 400 degrees F / 200 degrees C. This temperature range helps to achieve a crispy exterior while ensuring that the inside of the fries cooks properly.

Do You Spray Oil On Frozen French Fries In Air Fryer?

Determining if you spray oil on frozen French fries in air fryer depends on the type frozen fries you are using. Many frozen fries have oil added already, so exercise caution if you choose to add additional oil.

Avoid excessive use, as it could result in fries that are soggy and lacking in texture. Spray lightly to achieve wonderfully crispy frozen French fries in the air fryer.

What Are The Best Frozen French Fries For Air Fryers?

The best frozen French fries for air fryers can be subjective, as preferences vary based on factors like taste, texture, and dietary considerations.

However, here are a few popular frozen French fry brands to try namely: Alexia, McCain, Ore-Ida, Cavendish Farms, Costco’s private label brand, Kirkland Signature, and Trader Joe’s.

We have been quarantining in my in-laws basement so that we can have the holidays together, and all we had was a freezer full of food and an air fryer. We have TONS of frozen french fries in there, so we have been experimenting with them. We haven’t quite got it right yet, so this came at the most perfect time! I am going to try this today, thank you so much for this!!
