Every holiday I find myself needing one more rack in my oven. There is never enough room to cook everything and since recipe temperatures vary, I find myself prepping for days in advance to get all my favorite dishes cooked so they can be reheated on the big day.

Expert Recipe Tips

  • In general, I don’t cook full-sized pies in my air fryer. For this recipe, I use a 3-inch pie pan. This allows me to make the best use of the size of my air fryer, but also keeps me from having pies that are under or overcooked.
  • Make a batch of Instant Pot Mashed Sweet Potato and store the sweet potato puree in 1 cup bags in the freezer so you always have some on hand.
  • Air fryer temperatures can vary depending on the make and model. I recommend starting with less cook time, checking for doneness, then adding more time as needed.

Delicious Variations

  • Try different pie crusts – Traditional pie crust is yummy but this pie is also great when air fried into nut based crusts, cookie crusts, and graham cracker crusts.
  • Use brown butter instead of oil – Replace the oil with the same amount of browned butter for a complex and deep, nutty flavor.
  • Top it off – Whipped cream is traditional but you could top it with caramel, melted chocolate, marshmallow, nuts, and toasted coconut.
  • Add bourbon – If you can add bourbon to a recipe, you must! Adding a tablespoon of bourbon gives this pie an extra burst of flavor.

Make Ahead and Storage

  • Make Ahead – If you are making your own pie dough, you will want to make this at least a day in advance. You will also need to prepare your sweet potato puree using our Instant Pot Mashed Sweet Potato recipe
  • Store – Refrigerate the pie after cooling and store for up to three days.
  • Freeze – Air fry the pies as directed and allow them to cool completely. Wrap them tightly with foil or plastic wrap and place into a zip-top bag. Store in the freezer for up to three months.
  • Thaw – Thaw the pies overnight in the fridge and bring them to room temperature before serving.

FAQs

What is the Difference Between Pumpkin and Sweet Potato Pie?

The cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger give both of these pies similar flavor profiles, but there are a few differences.

Sweet potato is generally sweeter than pumpkin with a deeper, richer flavor. Pumpkin pie will be more custard like, while sweet potato pie is denser and creamier.

Can I Use Butter Instead of Oil?

If you don’t have any oil on hand, or you just prefer the flavor of butter, then yes, you can substitute the same amount of room temperature butter.

Be sure to mix well with the sugar before adding other ingredients so your sweet potato pie filling isn’t lumpy.

Can I Use Pumpkin Pie Spice?

Sometimes the ratio of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger in pumpkin pie spice is not to my liking, therefore I prefer to add each ingredient separately. But if you have a pumpkin pie spice blend that you are fond of, it is an acceptable alternative.

I Have a Large Air Fryer, Do I Need to Make Mini Pies?

I always prefer smaller pies when air frying. If your air fryer has a larger basket, you may certainly use a standard-sized pie plate. You may need to add additional cooking time.
