Recipe Tips and Timings

Okay folks, here are a few tips to make air frying tofu easy and fail proof:

  • Remember that this recipe uses extra firm tofu. If your tofu is not extra firm, then press it to firm it up before using – see the how to section below.
  • The tofu gets crispier as it cools down, so don’t overcook it.
  • Be sure the tofu is dry before adding marinade/cornstarch/seasoning.
  • Make sure the tofu is coated evenly in the marinade or cornstarch so all sides have flavor and crisp up.
  • Do turn the tofu a couple of times during cooking so that they cook evenly.
  • Simply omit the Sriracha sauce if you want less heat.
  • Use corn tortillas to keep your tofu wrap gluten-free. But if not an issue, then use any other wraps you prefer.
  • Make sure the veggies are as dry as possible as wet veggies will result in soggy wraps.
  • You can have bigger cut veggies for more of a crunch or smaller grated veggies instead.
  • Use this cornstarch coating #hack with carrots, parsnips, cauliflower, broccoli, green beans, and cucumbers. Trust me, once you try the cornstarch method,  you will never go back!

Prep Ahead and Storing

This is an ideal meal prep recipe because it can be easily stored in the fridge until you need it.

  • Prep ahead – Marinate the uncooked tofu for up to 24 hours before cooking.
  • Store – Cook the tofu, cool it down and refrigerate for up to 3 days in an airtight container.

Air Fried Tofu Variations

This crispy tofu recipe is simple using only a few spices and salt as a base. However, you can season it with a variety of other spices to your taste. Here are a few suggestions for you to try:

  • Vary the spices (in the cornstarch version) – Use shawarma seasoning, Italian Seasoning or check out all my homemade spice blends.
  • Change up the marinade – Hoisin sauce, minced ginger, minced garlic, etc.
  • Use different veggies in the wrap – grated carrots, spinach, lettuce, etc.

How Long to Cook Tofu in The Air Fryer

  • For this recipe you need 12 minutes in the air fryer.
  • If you want it crunchier, then fry for 1-2 mins more.
  • Air fryer temperatures can vary depending on the make and model, so I recommend starting with less cook time, checking for doneness then adding more time as needed.

How to Press Tofu

You do need a firm tofu for this. So buy extra firm tofu to start with. If you can only get firm tofu, then you may want to press it first. The easiest way to press tofu is to use a tofu press. However, you don’t have to have a press. Instead, you can simply follow these steps:

  • Wrap the tofu in a couple of dishcloths.
  • Put on top of a plate or cutting board.
  • Add a plate or baking sheet on top of the wrapped tofu.
  • Add weight to the top of the plate using something like canned food or cookbooks.
  • Leave for a minimum of 30 mins, but preferably 4 hrs or more.
  • You may need to change out the dishcloth once during the pressing process.
  • When done, unwrap the tofu, cut into bite-sized and cook.

Why Use An Air Fryer?

The magic of the air fryer is that it circulates heat around all sides of your food, which allows you to ‘fry’ using the smallest amount of oil. Folks, we’re talking anything from a tablespoon to just a light spray. And since you are using hardly any oil (or even no oil at all), your food contains far less fat and calories overall. #allgoodright.
