Recipe Tips
- Use firm, crisp apples as they will hold up best.
- Please remember to make sure the oats are gluten free (if you are following a gluten-free diet).
Delicious Variations
- Use different apples – Apples can be sweet or tart or something in between but experiment with different varieties until you find your favorite.
- Vary the spices – Feel free to use ground cardamom, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, etc.
- Vary the nuts – You could also use almonds, walnuts, or cashews.
- Make it dairy-free – swap the butter for dairy-free butter or coconut oil.
- Swap the fruit – use pears or peaches instead. The cooking time would be different of course.
Prep Ahead And Storage
- Make-Ahead – These can definitely be made a day or two ahead of time and refrigerated. Best to reheat in the oven before serving.
- Store – You can store leftover apples in an airtight container for 3 days.
- Freeze – You can freeze baked apples. To freeze them, don’t add the streusel topping. Bake until apples are slightly under done, let cool and wrap individual apples in heavy duty aluminium foil and add to an air tight container. Freeze for up to a month. Thaw and reheat before serving.
FAQs
It is best to go for some crisp tart apples as these hold their shape better. Get varieties like Honey Crisp, Granny Smith, Jonagold, Braeburn, Pink Lady or Fuji.
Start with firm crisp apples. Also keep an eye on them during baking. Check about 5-10 minutes before the baking time is up and you can gauge how much longer the need.
