Baked Orange Donuts With Cinnamon Sugar
These Baked Orange Donuts with Cinnamon Sugar started out as completely different recipe. They were going to be some sort of, possibly complex, baked Nutella Swirl Donuts.
So I made up the buttermilk, got all the ingredients ready and whacked the Nutella in the microwave to get it oooey gooey melty swilling perfect. Folks, I was organised. And then I made the mistake of dipping a teaspoon into the Nutella, Then a second one, then a third. And before I knew it, the Nutella was ALL gone. Greedy happy me.
Folks, I am not ashamed to say that I did have a ‘oh crap what have I done’ 5 mins of panic. Which was swiftly replaced by a ‘I have got doughnut ingredients out so I WILL make donuts’ hyper phase. Which was obviously followed by a mad rush through the store cupboard to find ingredients to replace the nutella donuts idea.
In the middle of my escalating self-induced panic, I spot the one and only remaining orange at the bottom of the fruit bowl. Folks, I actually shouted out hallelujah in my excitement.
And so, the Orange Donuts were born.
How To Make Orange Donuts
-
Preheat the oven and lightly oil two 6 cup donut tins.
-
Mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl and set aside.
-
In another bowl, combine the buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, orange juice and orange zest.
-
Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until everything is just combined.
-
Using a spoon, add the batter in to 8 donut cups until they are three quarters full.
-
Bake the orange donuts for 13-15 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean, remove them from the oven and let them cool in the pan before transferring them to wire rack to cool completely.
-
Mix together the sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Dip the donuts in the melted butter, let the excess butter drip off before dipping in the cinnamon sugar till they are well coated.
Orange Donut Variations
So baked orange donuts it was and they are as simple as it sounds, aka add some lovely orange zest to my standard baked donut recipe and cover them in some cinnamon sugar.
- To be honest you can do without the cinnamon sugar (my oldest prefers this) but it does add something rather special to the donuts (my youngest prefers).
- You can swap the orange zest for come other citrus zest in this baked donuts recipe.
Cinnamon Sugar Tips
- Use regular sugar not powdered sugar.
- Feel free to add more cinnamon to taste.
- Make sure the excess butter drips off before dunking the donuts in the cinnamon sugar.
What To Serve With Baked Donuts

These do sound nice. I’m on the lookout for a silicone doughnut tray as they do stick in my mini doughnut tray. I bet the cinnamon sugar complements these orange doughnuts perfectly x
Love the look and sound of these. Perfect. Have to get a doughnut tin. GG

Baked donuts are the best – I love how quickly and easily I can get them in my mouth. Cinnamon sugar is definitely my favourite way to top a donut. Love the addition of fragrant orange in yours!
I have just recently started baking donuts. They are a fun little treat to make. This sounds like a great flavour combination.
Gotta love those, wow this came together and it’s incredible, moments! Nothing is quite as yummy as donuts fresh from the oven. I bet these smell heavenly with the orange and the cinnamon.
A baked doughnut? I want to try this recipe out!
I always get intimidated from trying to make donuts. Your recipe looks fairly easy to try. I must give it a try
These look fabulous! And even without Nutella I am sure they were yummy! That’s what happens when I eat Nutella as well. Before I know it, it’s all gone.
I have first hand experience of how dangerous the Nuttela can be 😉 One spoon leads to another and before I know it, the jar is licked clean. I have cooked some of my best dishes by accident! Seriously 🙂 And this baked orange doughnuts look so perfect!
You had me laughing with your disappearing Nutella story. That has NEVER happened to me…er…uh…ANYWAY. I have never tried doughnuts with this flavor combo, and they sound divine! I can’t wait to try these.
Nutella is dangerous like that! But the doughnuts are a fantastic save! Orange (any citrus really) is something I gravitate to, so you’re tugging on my heartstrings with this one!
Doughnuts are my jam. And my weakness. I love them SO much and these orange doughnuts sound IN-CREDIBLE! I cannot wait to try these!
Some of the greatest inventions in the world have been by accident. Maybe eating all of that Nutella could be a blessing in disguise. These look great, you might be onto something.
