Notes On Cooking These With Other Dishes

Might as well make your grill work as efficiently as possible for you by grilling your potatoes along with other dishes.

If grilling with other foods at a higher temperature, your potatoes will cook quicker. If you think that there is not enough time to properly cook the potatoes, you will need to either precook the potatoes before grilling or start by cooking the potatoes first on the grill before adding in the other foods partway through cooking.

If grilling with other foods at a lower temperature, your potatoes will take longer to cook. To cut cook time you will need to precook the potatoes before grilling.

Recipe Tips

  • Make sure to preheat grill before cooking your taties, for the best results.
  • Try to grill equally sized russet potatoes, so that they cook at the same rate.
  • Turn them over once during cooking so they cook evenly.
  • Make sure to keep the grill lid closed as much as you can during cooking so that the temperature stays as even as possible (like you would for an oven).
  • Make sure each entire potato is well oiled and seasoned.
  • If your spuds are undercooked, then grill for a bit longer.
  • Done potatoes are super hot, so please use tongs to carefully transfer them to a plate before serving.

Delicious Variations

  • Add more seasoning – add extra flavors with garlic powder, onion powder, old bay seasoning, Italian seasoning, etc.
  • Add heat – with some red pepper flakes, chili powder, chipotle, etc.
  • Vary the coating – use melted butter instead of oil if you prefer.

Storage

Store – Let grilled baked potato cool, then store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Topping ideas

Favorite toppings include;

  • Butter – melted butter is so delicious.
  • Sour cream – piled high.
  • Grilled chicken – cooked at the same time.
  • Grilled veggies – also grilled at the same time.
  • Cheese – all that melted cheese.
  • Bacon – the crispier the better.
  • Vegan butter – and vegan cheese (if vegan).

FAQs

How Long To Cook Baked Potato On Grill

Cooking time will depend on the size of the potatoes and the cooking temperature. Aim for 45 minutes to 1 hour and then test. My medium sized potatoes took about 1 hour. Larger ones will take longer.

How Do I Make These Quicker?

Pierce your potatoes with a fork, then microwave your potatoes for about 4-5 minutes beforehand, until softened, and then cook on the grill just before serving.

How Do You Know When These Are Done?

Potatoes on the grill are done when the internal temperature (use an instant read thermometer) reaches at least 205 degrees F or 96 degrees C.

If you don’t have a thermometer then they are done when you can easily pierce the flesh with a paring knife or skewer. If these slide easily through the flesh then they are done.
