Beetroot Relish
This Beetroot Relish also doubles up as Beetroot Jam and is the perfect to make when you have a glut of beetroot. It is vegan and gluten-free too.
Folks, it’s cold outside. I know this happens every year, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. I have already added ‘time machine’ to my Christmas list this year. Upon its arrival, I will just press ‘fast forward’ till spring. (Okay, maybe I’ll make a quick stop at New Year’s on my way to spring and eat some Hoppin’ John Soup.)
Don’t tell me that isn’t possible. It’s going to happen.
Until my fancy time machine arrives, I’m going to make the best of this season by baking delicious Pierniczki świąteczne Christmas cookies, listing to Christmas music on my Spotify playlists (it’s never too early for Christmas music), and admiring the Christmas tree ornaments that have decorated my windows since October.
What can I say? I looove Christmas… even in November. And you’re going to looove this Beetroot relish just as much – esp when you can add it to some fun Orange-Cranberry Shortbread Cookies with Jam (instead of the cranberry jam). Yes please for anything that helps bring that extra yum factor to Christmas baking.
Don’t you agree??
How to Make Beetroot Relish
Making beetroot relish is super easy. And it is only made with 8 ingredients, most of which you already have in your pantry.
You need warming spices of ground ginger and cardamom, a dash of vanilla, sugar, orange juice and lemon juice, apples and of course grated beetroot. I really suggest you use grated beetroot for this as there is something about the texture that works really, really well.
Basically, you mix everything together and dump it in a pot.
If you want to make this on the cooker, then add the relish mixture into a pot, and cook slowly for 60-90 mins stirring frequently till done to your taste.
If you want this Beetroot Relish to be a little sharper then feel free to add a little less sugar and a little bit more lemon. It is all good.

Beetroot Jam
To be honest, whilst I call this a beetroot relish, it actually doubles up as a Beetroot Jam also. Feel free to add more warming jam type spices to this recipe instead and eat it slathered on bread, heaped on granola or yoghurt and straight out of the bottle with a teaspoon, just because.
It is THAT good. Have I convinced you yet?

I’m crazy for beet but I’ve never had them like this, it sounds amazing. I love the idea of pairing it with yogurt, yum!
Wow, this is interesting. I never thought to use beets in such a sweet treat. Saving this:)
Oh I have not seen beetroot relish every since my grand mom made it years ago. I remember as kids we didn’t enjoy beetroot but we did love the relish in our sandwiches. This looks so pretty. I must make some again. Thanks for the inspiration.
I’ve never heard of beetroot relish – I’m guessing it’s a very British thing? I’m sure Australians would go crazy over this as well, they add beetroot to everything, including their burgers 😉 I’m loving all the Christmasy spices!
