Anyone up for a gorgeous purple Blackberry Smoothie for breakfast, brunch, an afternoon snack or dinner? Yes friends, this totally works for dinner.
I love whipping up this Blackberry Banana Smoothie since it brings back fond memories of the kiddoes running out to pick blackberries from the hedges with the occasional acknowledging ‘mama yook, we share the brackbrie’ yells.
Eventually, they would traipse indoors with their purple faces and hands and hand over a bowl full of blackberries with a ‘mama yook, we bring you some’.

Recipe Tips
- For this you can use either fresh blackberries when you have them available but if not frozen blackberries work a treat.
- I prefer very thick smoothies so I use 1/2 cup (120ml) of milk. However please add more milk, (like up to another half a cup) if you want a more liquid drink.
- Make sure to only use ripe bananas – ripe banana is best for sweetness and easy blending.
- Use a high powered blender if starting with frozen fruits.
Easy Smoothie Delicious Variations
- Strawberry Blackberry Smoothie – To make this variation simply substitute half the blackberries for some strawberries. You can use either fresh or frozen strawberries for this recipe.
- Add extra fruits – add other fruit like frozen berries esp frozen blueberries, frozen mango, peaches etc.
- Ice cubes – you can add in some ice cubes to cool it down.
- Vary the milk – I love using unsweetened almond milk, soy milk, oat milk and coconut milk in this. You can even add in some coconut water.
- Add seeds and nuts – I love adding in seeds like flax seeds, chia seeds or nut butter eg almond butter or cashew butter. Add in some protein powder as well. Try a few variations and see what you like.
Storage Tips
- Chill – Store in glasses covered in plastic wrap or an airtight container for up to 1 day in the refrigerator. Remix before serving.
- Freeze in Jars – Freeze the blended smoothie in mason jars (with a little space at the top to allow for expansion). Let it thaw in the refrigerator, and mix in a little milk if needed before serving.
FAQs
To make this a Blackberry Smoothie without yogurt, simply substitute and replace the yogurt with extra milk. Easy peasy.
To make this a Vegan Blackberry Smoothie substitute both the milk and yogurt with a dairy free milk like almond milk.
You can use frozen Blackberries in this Blackberry Smoothie. It makes the smoothie ice cold cold and thick. If you do want a cold drink, then make it just before you serve it.
Yes they absolutely are (depending on the other add ins). Berries tend to be full of potassium, rich in calcium and antioxidants, vitamin C & vitamin K along with some fiber and some carbohydrates.

How awesome that you have your own blackberries growing! We have some wild blackberries but the birds usually get to them before we do. Your smoothie looks so delicious and is the most beautiful color!
PS – With my frozen roasted tomatoes, I’ve made roasted tomato soup before. I wouldn’t necessarily eat them raw again, but I will use them in sauces and soups.
Thanks for the tip on the tomatoes. Now you have me intrigued as to roast tomato soup.
Sounds so good! Our wild blackberries produced in June, and I sure do miss them! Will save this recipe for next year when they come back!!
Lori, you are in for a treat next year.
Oh, no! Now I’m REALLY craving a smoothie! I was wanting one earlier today, but after seeing this delicious recipe I’m almost literally drooling. Yum!! Thanks for the recipe!
You know what Stacy, Now I am drooling too.
I love smoothies, especially those with fresh berries. How amazing that you have so many right outside your front door!
You are right. I am rather lucky.
How wonderful to have access to fresh blackberries! I am not sure where to find really fresh fruit like that but I am on my way soon to find out. The smoothie sounds fantastic!
Good luck. But dont worry frozen fruit taste good too in this smoothie.
I can’t wait to try this out. I used to eat black berries all the time when I was a kid… I need to start again!

Enjoy every moment. See if you can have work up a purple face as well.
I’m not a huge smoothie fan (mostly because I don’t like bananas & I can’t have the yogurt – kinda puts a damper on things, huh?), but I am a HUGE fan of blackberries!!! I’m jealous that you can go pick them fresh. When hope to move out of town into the country in a few years and that is one thing we hope to have are blackberry bushes!!! I love them fresh!!! ENJOY some for me would ya?!
Annette can you try the smoothies with orange juice and something like peaches instead.
Luscious and yummy :-), we went blackberry picking a few weeks ago too!
Woman after my own heart…..
This blue berry smoothie sounds yummy. Thanks!
Thanks Jessica
Blackberry picking? I am jealous. I love that you are making smoothies with fresh berries. I plan to make this soon (sadly w/ store bought berries) for my family. Luckily, my boys love fruit & smoothies! Thanks for the recipe!
I hope they like this one.
I’ve become a huge fan of smoothies over the last year! They are so healthy and so yummy! I put some of thew weirdest things together sometimes and it somehow always turns out delicious! I absolutely love blackberries and am so excited to try out this recipe! Thank you so much for sharing!!
Enjoy it Cindy.
When I was in high school we would drive down a few towns and bring our buckets to a trail that had miles of blackberries amongst the trees… then we would go home and eat them with ice cream and make jam. We just bought a new home with a line of trees in the back… and I am dying to plant some blackberries along there so my kids can enjoy them as well.
I like the idea of using buckets……
Mmm… This sounds like the perfect delicious breakfast to go. Perfect for taking to school! Have you tried freezing the extra and thawing it later? I’m thinking it might not work because of the yogurt, but it would sure save time!
I am too greedy to try freezing smoothies. But you can freeze the berries.
I wish I had bushes and bushes of blackberries around me instead of paying $4 for a pint. I love blackberries and this smoothie looks delicious!!
Hey Zainab, if only I can send you some.
How sweet! Sometimes I really miss those simple pleasures from childhood and am a little sad that my kids aren’t more adventurous. Maybe next summer I will take them on the hunt for wild berries in our neighbourhood…I’ve bookmarked this recipe and will definitely try it out soon.

I know…..
This smoothie sounds so good!
Tastes good too.
I remember picking blackberries from bramble patches when I was a kid and it definitely was an engrossing task – we could spend hours at it! What a delicious shake and and a simple way to enjoy these fresh berries…
Thanks Javelin Warrior. I love delish engrossing tasks like this one.
This sounds perfect for the abundant blackberries in our hedges too. Love the image of the purple sticky faces. GG
Yeap their sticky purple faces are the best image ever.
I’m going to go and make this smoothie right now, to use up my blueberries. I often forget the joy of simple smoothies and go for the more complicated, but sometimes you just want to focus in on one flavour.
I know what you mean. I am the same with forgetting that sometimes simple is best.
Yum! I love blackberries. I never really thought about where they came from other than the grocery store, lol! I was looking for breakfast ideas for an upcoming couples trip. I think this could work well!
