Anyone up for a gorgeous purple Blackberry Smoothie for breakfast, brunch, an afternoon snack or dinner? Yes friends, this totally works for dinner.
I love whipping up this Blackberry Banana Smoothie since it brings back fond memories of the kiddoes running out to pick blackberries from the hedges with the occasional acknowledging ‘mama yook, we share the brackbrie’ yells.
Eventually, they would traipse indoors with their purple faces and hands and hand over a bowl full of blackberries with a ‘mama yook, we bring you some’.

Recipe Tips
- For this you can use either fresh blackberries when you have them available but if not frozen blackberries work a treat.
- I prefer very thick smoothies so I use 1/2 cup (120ml) of milk. However please add more milk, (like up to another half a cup) if you want a more liquid drink.
- Make sure to only use ripe bananas – ripe banana is best for sweetness and easy blending.
- Use a high powered blender if starting with frozen fruits.
Easy Smoothie Delicious Variations
- Strawberry Blackberry Smoothie – To make this variation simply substitute half the blackberries for some strawberries. You can use either fresh or frozen strawberries for this recipe.
- Add extra fruits – add other fruit like frozen berries esp frozen blueberries, frozen mango, peaches etc.
- Ice cubes – you can add in some ice cubes to cool it down.
- Vary the milk – I love using unsweetened almond milk, soy milk, oat milk and coconut milk in this. You can even add in some coconut water.
- Add seeds and nuts – I love adding in seeds like flax seeds, chia seeds or nut butter eg almond butter or cashew butter. Add in some protein powder as well. Try a few variations and see what you like.
Storage Tips
- Chill – Store in glasses covered in plastic wrap or an airtight container for up to 1 day in the refrigerator. Remix before serving.
- Freeze in Jars – Freeze the blended smoothie in mason jars (with a little space at the top to allow for expansion). Let it thaw in the refrigerator, and mix in a little milk if needed before serving.
FAQs
To make this a Blackberry Smoothie without yogurt, simply substitute and replace the yogurt with extra milk. Easy peasy.
To make this a Vegan Blackberry Smoothie substitute both the milk and yogurt with a dairy free milk like almond milk.
You can use frozen Blackberries in this Blackberry Smoothie. It makes the smoothie ice cold cold and thick. If you do want a cold drink, then make it just before you serve it.
Yes they absolutely are (depending on the other add ins). Berries tend to be full of potassium, rich in calcium and antioxidants, vitamin C & vitamin K along with some fiber and some carbohydrates.

I love smoothies-this look delish!
That sounds DELICIOUS! Yum! We don’t have naturally occuring blackberries in our neighborhood… but I’m sure I can find frozen ones that will be good enough… or maybe even fresh ones imported from up North… brings back lovely memories of growing up in Montana and our brambles and berries… thanks!
If only we had hedges filled with Blackberries I would be baking up a storm of delicious goodies. Those are the things I wish I could have. City living can be a draw back at times. The smoothie look great.
There’s nothing like picking berries with the little ones and then making something. We recently went on a raspberry hunt and had raspberry jam the next day đ

Yes! We LOVE blackberry season. We don’t have as many as it sounds like you have, but my kids have been watching ours on an almost daily basis to see when they’re ready. But, kick me, I’ve never thought of making a smoothie with them. Duh! I’ve put them on ice cream and yogurt, but never like this. Well, sounds like I have a new recipe to try, thanks so much for sharing đ

I’ve grown up and lived around blackberries in abundance. I just can’t get over the crunchy seeds. I don’t mind if stuff is made into a jelly. I love the flavor of blackberries, just not the seeds.
Ooooooh. Do you make blackberry jelly lots then?
