Why Make This Coffee Recipe

  • No strange additives – Coffee, milk, maple syrup, and cardamom pods… that’s it.
  • No refined sugars – This coffee is sweetened only with maple syrup, a more natural sweetener.
  • Bold Flavor – The citrus notes of the cardamom really give this coffee drink a bold and unique flavor.

Ingredient Notes

  • Freshly Brewed Strong Black Coffee – A robust black coffee provides a bold and invigorating base for this drink.
  • Cardamom Pods – Steeping cardamom in coffee adds a warm, citrusy, and slightly spicy note, elevating the coffee into a fragrant and aromatic experience.
  • Milk – Milk is a creamy addition that balances the boldness of the coffee and complements the cardamom infusion. Feel free to use half and half or plant-based milks as preferred.
  • Maple Syrup – A healthier alternative to refined sugar, maple syrup brings a natural sweetness that harmonizes with the coffee and cardamom, creating a delightful and nuanced sweetness without overpowering the other flavors. Make sure to use high-quality, genuine maple syrup for the best flavor.
  • Ice – For those who prefer their coffee on the rocks, ice provides a refreshing twist to the drink, turning it into a cooling and invigorating option for warmer days.

Pro Tips

  • Start with high-quality, freshly ground coffee beans for the best flavor. A strong black coffee forms the foundation of this drink, so choose a blend that resonates with your taste preferences.
  • Opt for whole cardamom pods and split them just before brewing. This ensures the aromatic oils are at their peak, enhancing the flavor profile of the coffee. Crushing or grinding cardamom releases its essence, contributing to the brew’s complexity.
  • Add the maple syrup when the coffee is hot to allow it to dissolve and infuse its sweetness evenly. This step ensures a balanced and nuanced sweetness throughout the entire drink.
  • Stir in the milk just before serving.
  • For the iced version, use chilled glasses to maintain the refreshing quality of the drink. Pour the infused coffee and milk mixture over the ice for a crisp and invigorating sip.

Delicious Variations

  • Add Vanilla – Vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste add a warm floral note that complements the cardamom.
  • Use Flavored Coffee – Use a flavor-enhanced coffee for a unique and flavorful twist.
  • Use Honey – Instead of maple syrup, sweeten the coffee with honey.
  • Non-dairy – Substitute the milk with almond milk or your favorite plant-based option.

Prep and Storage

  • Prep – Hot coffee should be served immediately. For iced coffee, advanced prep is recommended to allow the coffee time to cool.
  • Storage – Leftover coffee can be stored in the fridge for several days.
  • Freeze – Freeze leftover coffee in an ice cube tray and use in future batches of iced coffee to prevent your coffee from being watered down.
  • Reheat – If you want to reheat the coffee, do so gently on the stovetop or in the microwave. Keep in mind that reheating may alter the flavor, so it’s ideal to enjoy Cardamom with Coffee freshly brewed.

FAQs

Can I use ground cardamom instead of cardamom pods for Cardamom Coffee?

You can substitute ground cardamom for cardamom pods. Use a pinch of ground cardamom per cup of coffee and adjust according to your taste preference. Keep in mind that ground cardamom may have a more intense flavor, so start with a smaller amount and add more if needed.

What is Cardamom?

The spice cardamom is harvested from a few different plants, and some produce green cardamom pods while others produce black cardamom pods (the kind I’ve used in Iced Maple Syrup Cardamom Coffee). It is best to buy cardamom still inside the pods and discard the pods immediately before use.

Can I make cardamom coffee without maple syrup?

While maple syrup adds a unique sweetness, you can use other sweeteners like honey, agave nectar, or even regular sugar. Adjust the quantity based on your desired level of sweetness.

Can I make a large batch and store it for later?

It’s recommended to enjoy Cardamom Coffee freshly brewed for the best flavor. However, if you need to make a larger batch, store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Keep in mind that the flavor may change slightly upon reheating.

What other spices can I add to my coffee?

Feel free to experiment with other spices like cinnamon, cloves, or ginger to create your own customized spice blend. Adjust the quantities to suit your taste and discover new flavor combinations.
