How To Make Crock Pot Peanut Butter Cake

Get the complete ingredients list and instructions from the recipe card below.

  1. Mix together cake mix, water, oil, peanut butter and eggs until smooth. Don’t worry if there are a few small lumps, it’s still okay.
  2. Spray the slow cooker insert with non stick spray and add in the cake batter. Gently tap so that the cake batter evens out into a smooth layer.
  3. Cover the crockpot and cook on HIGH for 2 hours. Please don’t open the lid whilst it is baking.
  4. When the cake is done, turn off the heat and remove the Slow Cooker Insert and set aside, so the cake doesn’t keep cooking.
  5. Melt the peanut butter in the microwave until it is pourable and pour over the cake when it’s still warm.
  6. Top with the crushed or halved Reese’s peanut butter cups and chocolate chips.

Expert Recipe Tips

  • Use a larger (5 qt or 6 qt) Crockpot. I don’t recommend using a smaller one than that for this recipe.
  • Don’t forget to use non-stick cooking spray before pouring in the batter.
  • Make sure to remove the crockpot insert when finished cooking. Just turning it off and leaving in the slow cooker risks the cake overbaking.
  • If serving over a long period of time, start serving from the outside first.
  • Use a slow cooker liner makes clean up super easy. And if you use a liner, you can carefully pick up the cake to see how the edges have cooked.
  • Remember that every crockpot cooks differently. Different makes and models cook at different temperatures, check your manual for your specific model for recommended use and cooking times.

Delicious Variations

This classic Slow Cooker Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake is decadently delicious just the way it is. However, here are a few ways you can customize to make it even more amaaaaazing.

  • Add more mix-ins: Try chocolate syrup, dark chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, Reese’s Pieces, crushed pretzel, or other crushed chocolate candies.
  • Trade out toppings: Try mini M&M’s, Kit-Kats, or any of your favorite chocolate candies cut in half or crushed.
  • Replace the peanut butter: Make this with almond butter, cashew butter, or Nutella.

Pro Tip: Put out small bowls of various crushed candies to let your guests add their favorite toppings, however much they like.

Prep Ahead And Store

Crockpot Peanut Butter Cake is a dessert that our whole family enjoys and I’m sure yours will too.

  • Prep Ahead – Not much to prep ahead with this recipe, as once you’ve made the batter it just needs to cook and you want to wait to heat the peanut butter until ready to pour.
  • Store – Make ahead and store in an airtight container or wrapped in plastic wrap on the counter for 1-2 days.
