Pumpkin Butter is a classic fall recipe that goes on so many things. It’s a thick spiced spread that combines pumpkin with apple juice and aromatic, warming, fragrant spices

Often it’s made with pumpkin purée which creates a darker thicker spread and lets you make it any time of year. However, you can make it with fresh pumpkin when in season.

  1. Add all the ingredients into the crockpot and mix to combine.
  2. Cover and cook on high for 3 1/2 hours. Stop to mix at the 1 hour and 2 hours mark.
  3. Open the cover for the last 30 minutes so it reduces in thickness.

Delcious Variations

This Slow Cooker Pumpkin Butter is real perfection just as is, but you can try these other ideas;

  • To make it even sweeter: Although this Pumpkin spread is sweet as it is, if you want to make it a bit sweeter, increase the brown sugar to 2 ¼ cups (450g). 
  • Trade out the pumpkin pie spice: Try using  1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, and a pinch of cloves instead.

Prep Ahead and Storage

  • Store – Stored in an airtight container in the fridge, this spread will last for up to 10 days.
  • Freeze –   Let cool down then transfer into convenient Ziploc freezer bags.
  • Squeeze out all the extra air and seal the bags. Label the bags and then lay them flat in the freezer. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Defrost – Thaw in the fridge overnight.
  • Meal Prep – You can easily double or triple this recipe to make enough for various dishes and it would make the perfect edible gift or hostess gift during the holidays.

How Long Is Pumpkin Butter Good For?

Homemade Pumpkin Butter is good for about  10 days in the fridge, properly stored in a mason jar. If you want to freeze it, it’s good for up to 3 months.

Folks, I know we all looooove everything pumpkin flavor, especially during the autumn season and cooler weather. But it’s important to know that it’s not safe to try to can this pumpkin butter. It’s such a dense mixture it’s hard to get it to a proper temperature to kill off any bad bacteria.

  • 3 15 oz (400g) can pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1 3/4 cup (350g) brown sugar
  • 1 cup (240ml) unsweetened apple juice
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 2-3 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extra


  • Add all the ingredients into the crockpot.
