WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS REMOULADE SAUCE RECIPE

  • Super easy homemade sauce that’s ready in just 5 minutes.
  • Great make ahead sauce and easy to double or triple.
  • Made with just a handful of common kitchen staple ingredients.
  • Packed full of ah-maz-ing flavor that will totally transform any dish.

What is Remoulade Sauce?

Classic Remoulade is a creamy, yet tart mayo-based sauce with herbs that resembles a type of tartar sauce. Originating in France, Americans have since jazzed up the original Remoulade recipe a bit by creating different variations of Remoulade Sauce.

Remoulade Sauce is a key component in many Southern staple dishes from Louisiana, New Orleans and other Southern food hotspots. While it’s famous for being used on an Oyster or Shrimp Po’ Boy Sandwich, it also makes a great dipping sauce for other fried seafood, French fries, green tomatoes, and crab or salmon cakes.

Cajun Remoulade takes the traditional Remoulade Sauce Recipe and kicks it up a notch with a spicy punch of heat. It is made with mayonnaise mixed with garlic, sriracha, hot sauce and some herbs.

And as you know peeps, I loooooove to add a nice touch of heat in my dishes, so this is the version that my Remoulade Sauce recipe is based on.

Remoulade Sauce Ingredients

  • sriracha sauce
  • mayo
  • Dijon mustard
  • paprika
  • garlic powder
  • lemon juice
  • Franks Red hot sauce original
  • sea salt flakes
  • onion powder (optional)

Recipe Tips

  • This homemade Sauce uses pantry staple ingredients, but you can easily substitute in fresh versions if you prefer.
  • While this is ready to serve in 5 mins, letting it sit for a bit in the fridge will enhance the flavoring of this sauce.
  • If you have them, add chopped hard-boiled eggs to make this a New Orleans Style Remoulade.

Recipe Variations

This Remoulade is made with shelf-stable pantry ingredients but if you have fresh options, I always recommend using them. And as with all pantry staple recipes, you may need to swap out an ingredient for something similar. Some options to vary out with this dip are:

  • minced garlic cloves for garlic powder
  • minced onion or minced shallots for onion powder
  • apple cider vinegar or dill pickle juice for lemon juice

MEAL PREP AND PREP AHEAD

Can You Make Remoulade Ahead of Time?

This is yet another reason to love homemade sauces!!! They can be made ahead of time if needed. And much of the time, they intensify in flavor after originally made, especially if mayonnaise is a base ingredient.

How Do I Store It?

Store the sauce in an airtight container, such as a mason jar, in the fridge. Due to it being mayonnaise-based, do not let it sit out at room temperature for too long.

HOW LONG DOES REMOULADE SAUCE LAST IN THE FRIDGE?

Your Remoulade will last for up to two weeks if stored properly in the fridge.

CAN YOU FREEZE IT?

I do not suggest freezing the sauce since it has mayonnaise in it.

What’s the Difference Between a Tartar Sauce and Remoulade?

While both Tartar Sauce and Remoulade Sauce are creamy and tend to have a mayonnaise type base, they’re different. Plus, tartar sauce tends to have fewer ingredients. Remoulade is a more complex version of tartar with other spices and herbs mixed in to give it a tangy Creole or Cajun spicy kick.
