What is Ginger Sauce

So what exactly is Hibachi Ginger Sauce? It is a flavorful slightly sweet yet slightly tangy sauce served in Japanese steakhouse and can be used for dipped pretty much EVERYTHING! #somuchyum

Uses

The main way to use this Benihana Ginger sauce is for shrimp, steak, egg rolls, wontons, vegetables, etc. It is also great as a salad dressing or dipping for chargrilled lettuce wedges or chargrilled green onions into it. On busy nights it works as a quick marinade for chicken breasts.

A favorite way to have Hibachi Ginger Sauce is with a side of Air fryer Hibachi Shrimp and this Instant Pot Hibachi Fried Rice. Basically add it to any homemade hibachi style dinner to make them even better.

Ingredients………

This Japanese Steakhouse dipping sauce is surprisingly easy to make. You only need 5 ingredients (and a few optional additions) and they’re all items you probably already have in your pantry.

  • onion – you can use red or yellow onion.
  • ginger – fresh ginger root is preferable and peeled.
  • lemon juice – the juice from about 2 lemons.
  • rice wine vinegar – but I have use apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar instead.
  • Tamari soy sauce – Use a gluten free soy sauce or regular soy sauce to your preference.
  • optional: maple syrup (but highly recommended as it balances out the tart flavors).

Expert Recipe Tips

  • Add more onion if you prefer a chunkier sauce.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, reduce the liquids a bit.
  • You can always decrease or increase the amount of fresh ginger you add to your taste.
  • Add a bit more lemon if you prefer more sharpness.
  • You can use a blender if you prefer.
  • If you want a smooth sauce then add to blender and blend to your desired consistency.
  • You don’t need to grate your ginger or onion first – the food processor will do this for you.

Delicious Ways To Change It Up

Here are some delicious ways to change up this easy ginger dipping sauce:

  • Add some heat – feel free to add red chili flakes for some heat.
  • Change the sweetener – use honey or brown sugar instead.
  • Skip the sweetness – if you prefer a much sharper sauce then simply skip the sweetener.
  • Add zing – with a little bit of lemon zest. It is easier to zest your lemon before you juice it.

Pro Tip: The flavors of this develop over time, so feel free to make it a day before serving.

Storage

This ginger dipping sauce is very versatile, easily adaptable, and can be used with any meal, any time of the day, all year long.

  •  Store – Make ahead and store in a glass jar or other airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze – Place meal size portions in very handy Ziploc Freezer bags. But for longer storage, follow this nifty method: Portion the ginger sauce into ice cube trays. Once frozen, pop out the individual ice cubes of seasoning and then add them into a labeled Ziploc bag. Store in your freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Note: a silicon ice cube tray will make your life much easier.
  • Meal Prep – You can easily double or triple this recipe to make extra for other meals or freeze them for later use.

Chef’s Tip ==> You can add the frozen sauce cubes directly into soups, stews, or any recipe you are cooking. But if using them as a dipping sauce, you will need to thaw the cubes first.

FAQs

Can I Use Ground Ginger Instead Of Fresh Ginger?

You certainly can. Fresh ginger, along with all the other fresh ingredients gives a better flavor. But also fresh ginger adds chunkiness to the sauce. However, if you prefer then please use the powdered version to your taste.
