Yeap. No more scurrying to the computer mid-recipe, frantically google searching for answers to various kitchen conversion questions. Committing this simple kitchen formula (and a few others) to memory means you can get the job done quickly and easily.

I happen to prefer working with cups and tablespoons the most. In fact, I’ve been known to make entire meals using nothing but a single measuring spoon. Maybe it’s because I loathe washing up, and less dishes to wash is something that makes me quite happy. #cookmorecleanless

But there are certain times when using a measuring cup is waaaaayyyy more efficient. Like when I’m whipping up a big batch of my homemade Jamaican Curry Powder.

Imperial vs Metric System

It’s true that the Imperial System still prevails in the United States, with measurements typically done in feet, inches, and pounds. However, most countries around the world use the Metric System of measurements, which includes measures like meters, grams and liters

Thankfully for me (and my fellow foodie friends), both systems recognize teaspoons, tablespoons and cups as measurements of volume that are specific to cooking.

I find myself converting all sorts of measurements to tablespoons. Knowing how many teaspoons are in a tablespoon is a handy piece of info.

I find that when baking, it is important that your measurements be quite precise. So follow the tips below to ensure you get an accurate measurement.

When cooking other types of dishes, your measurements can be a little more flexible. If you are unsure, it’s always best to start with less as you can always add more.

    How To Measure Ingredients Properly

    1. Make sure to use the appropriate size of measuring cup or spoon for the job.
    2. When measuring dry ingredients (flour, sugar, spices), your vessel should be filled to the top. Use the back of a kitchen knife to scrape across the top to level it off.
    3. Don’t use your dry ingredient cups to measure liquids! Use cups or jugs that are meant for liquids. Place them on a flat, even surface and position yourself so the measurement mark is at eye level.

How many tablespoons are in 1/4 cup? Since 16 tablespoons = 1 cup, there are 4 tablespoons in a quarter cup. Which means the answer to the question, how many tablespoons are in half a cup is…8 tablespoons. Easy peasy, right?

The one that always trips me up, and that I only recently committed to memory, is how many tablespoons in 1/3 cup. It’s 5 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon, BTW.
