How To Boil Carrots
Get the complete ingredients list and instructions from the recipe card below.
Step 1. Rinse carrots, remove any debris, and pat them dry. If desired, peel using a sharp knife or vegetable peeler, then slice to a thickness of about a quarter-inch. Add to a large pot of boiling water, making sure there is enough water to cover them.
Step 2. Boil carrots for approximately 3-5 minutes. Cook for less time to get crisp tender carrots or a bit more time for softer carrots. Then drain, add any desired seasonings, serve, and enjoy.
Bintu’s Tips
- Feel free to slice carrots on the diagonal for a prettier presentation.
- Try and cook vegetables of the same size so the slices cook at the same rate.
- You can salt the water before boiling the carrots.
- Drain the carrots right away. Otherwise, they will continue cooking in the hot water. And be sure to drain them well so they don’t become soggy.
- Feel free to boil water in the kettle first, then add that boiling water to the saucepan to make cooking carrots even quicker.
Flavor Ideas
Carrots are one of those vegetables that tend to already have a lot of flavor as is, but if you want even more flavor, try finishing them with some of these ingredients;
- butter – because buttery boiled carrots are simply the best!
- maple syrup
- salt and black pepper
- fresh herbs, especially parsley and cilantro
- brown sugar or coconut sugar
- olive oil
- red pepper flakes
- Greek seasoning
- ranch seasoning
- nutmeg or cinnamon
- honey (if not vegan)
Prep Ahead And Storage
- Prep Ahead – Just wash and pat them dry and store them ready for peeling and boiling.
- Store – Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container or a dish covered with plastic wrap inside the fridge for up to 4 days.
- Freeze – I don’t recommend refreezing as the texture may become mushy.
- Reheat – Add a little olive oil into a saucepan or skillet and reheat over medium heat.
