Are Frozen Vegetables Healthy?

Frozen vegetables like frozen brussel sprouts sometimes get a bad rap, and you may be wondering if frozen veggies are healthy.

Fortunately, most of the nutrients (like vitamin c) in vegetables are retained, even when they are frozen. Some nutrients are lost during cooking, but frozen brussel sprouts are still healthy and delicious

Frozen vegetables are also budget friendly and perfect for easy meals in a hurry. With frozen vegetables, you don’t have to worry about using what you purchase before it goes bad, as frozen brussel sprouts and other vegetables will last 3-6 months (or longer) in the freezer.

Ingredient Notes

  • Sprouts – Look for a 1-pound bag of whole, frozen brussel sprouts in the freezer section of your grocery store.
  • Seasoning – Use your favorite seasoning blend. Salt and black pepper and garlic powder are my favorites.
  • Water – Depending on your cooking method, you may need to add water to the these.
  • Oil – When roasting frozen brussels sprouts or cooking them in the air fryer, you will need a bit of oil such as olive oil or avocado oil.

Pro Tips

  • There is no need to thaw frozen sprouts.
  • If your frozen sprouts are covered with a thick layer of ice, you can run them under cold water for a few seconds.
  • When air frying or roasting brussel sprouts, keep them in a single layer so they cook through and the edges get crispy.
  • When microwaving or cooking these in the instant pot, drain the excess water.
  • Use olive oil when making roasted frozen brussel sprouts in the oven or air fryer. To avoid overly crispy edges, add additional olive oil as needed.

Delicious Variations

  • Swap The Seasoning – Salt and pepper and garlic powder are perfect for seasoning sprouts but feel free to experiment. Other favorite seasoning options include lemon pepper, parmesan cheese, garlic salt, onion powder, Italian seasoning, and more.
  • Top Them Off – Fresh lemon juice is a great way to finish cooked sprouts. Simply squeeze lemon juice over them before serving. You can also add parmesan cheese, melted butter, or your favorite salad dressing.

Prep And Storage

  • Prep Ahead – There is no need to thaw sprouts. They have already been cleaned and trimmed.
  • Store – Leftover sprouts can be stored in an airtight container or a dish covered with plastic wrap inside the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze – We don’t recommend refreezing as the texture may become mushy.
  • Reheat – Instant pot and microwaved sprouts can be reheated in the microwave. Oven roasted brussels sprouts and air frier ones can be reheated on a baking sheet in the oven or in the air fryer until warmed through.
