Steamed Burgers
So the thing about these burgers is that they are steamed in the Instant Pot. Whilst this may seem strange to you (as it did to me when I first started playing around with the idea) it really really works. The resulting steamed burgers are soooooooooooooo juicy, you will almost never want to make them any other way.
Instant Pot Hamburger Patties
You have a few options when it comes to your meat patties.
Homemade Instant Pot Hamburger Patties
You can start with homemade patties. This is a great option because you know exactly what is going into your patties. The biggest tip is that you need to get mince with some fat in it as that fat is what gives your burgers amazing flavour.
The other great thing about making homemade patties is that you can make them as big or as small as you wish. Around here, 4oz patties or 6 oz patties are particular favourites. The patties in this recipe are simply made with
- lean ground beef
- salt
- pepper
Yeap, just 3 easy peasy ingredients that you 1001 percent already have in your pantry. To these, you can add aaaaaaaaaaaaall the extras you want, like fresh chopped herbs, cheese, chili powder, bacon, taco seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, chopped vegetables and more.
For shaping the burgers, you can either use your hands or grab one of those handy burger presses. Make life so much easier.
Store Bought Instant Pot Burger Patties
Whilst we love cooking from scratch, we also looove making life super easy. Therefore feel free to start with your favourite store-bought patties and them let the Instant Pot cook away.

Degrees of Doneness for Hamburgers
Degrees of doneness for hamburgers is a gauge of how thoroughly cooked the meat is based on the colour and internal temperature. Please use a Meat thermometer to check the temperature.
For burgers, the common gradations include: rare, medium rare, medium, medium well and well done.
- Rare: is a cool red center with an internal temperature of 52C (125F).
- Medium Rare: a warm red center with an internal temperature of 57C (135F).
- Medium: is a warm pink center with an internal temperature of 63C (145F).

How Long Do You Cook Instant Pot Burgers
Cooking hamburgers in the Instant Pot depends on the thickness of your burger.
Start with 10 mins and go from there. For thinner burgers, decrease the overall cook time. And for thicker burgers increase the cook time. And don’t forget to check the temperature using your Meat thermometer if you prefer.
- For 40z burgers try 8 minutes – 10 minutes.
- For 6oz burgers try 10 minutes – 13 minutes.
Instant Pot Hamburgers In Foil
These Instant Pot burgers are steamed in foil. I am talking about regular foil, no special foil needed. Just make sure when you are opening the packets you open them carefully and drain the liquid over a sink or something.
Cooking Them Without Foil
However, you can also cook the burgers in parchment paper if that is what you have instead. Just go ahead and make a parchment packet and cook as normal.
Low Carb Burgers
If you want your burgers to be low carb then you would need to skip the burger buns. Instead, you would use lettuce wraps or tomato slices or serve them along with a low carb salad.
