Who does not love a big old helping of creamy Mashed Sweet Potato mash!!!! It is one of my favorite side dishes to serve alongside meals or just as a breakfast treat with a little drizzle of maple syrup and toasted pecan or almonds.

These Cinnamon Maple Instant Mashed Sweet Potatoes are a great side dish for any meal including quick weeknight suppers, brunches or loooooong lazy fall lunches.

And if you are wondering what to whip up for potlucks or the upcoming holiday and festive dinners, then look no further than this awesome treat. It is frugal enough that you can double or triple this gluten free Instant Pot Mashed Sweet Potatoes recipe without much extra spend.

It is also a great way to use up lots of leftover sweet potatoes, simply cook in advance and store in the fridge. Then serve them after a quick reheat.

Peeps this recipe is sooooooo easy. You only need 2 ingredients, aka sweet potatoes and water, to make these Pressure Cooker Mashed Sweet Potatoes and you are good to go. However, I suggest adding in a few extra warming spices and a little more sweetness to end up with a lick your bowl clean kinda recipe.

TBH, sweet potatoes are sweet enough as is, but I think that adding a little bit of maple syrup enhances their amazing flavor that tiny bit extra.

Mashed Sweet Potato Ingredients

You will need these ingredients;

  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Maple Syrup
  • Cinnamon
  • Dairy Free butter
  • Pecans
  • Water, for cooking

How to make Instant Pot Mashed Sweet Potatoes

  1. Wash, peel and quarter sweet potatoes. But, if you prefer you can skip peeling them.
  2. Add 1 cup of water into the Instant Pot insert, making sure it does not pass the fill line.
  3. Place the potatoes inside the insert, cover your Instant Pot and set the valve to the SEALING position.
  4. Select the Pressure Cook or Manual button (dependent upon IP model), select high pressure and set the timer to 14 minutes.
  5. Cook till done, then perform a complete quick pressure release.
  6. Carefully open the lid and remove the sweet potatoes from the Instant Pot, making sure to drain the cooking water.
  7. Place sweet potatoes in a large bowl and add the rest of the ingredients before mashing.
  8. Serve your Instant Pot Mashed Sweet Potatoes warm.

Mashed Sweet Potatoes Instant Pot Tips

A few tips to help you get the best ever Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes Mashed of your life.

  • You don’t need to peel your sweet potatoes. You can just cut them up and add in. Try it both ways and see what you prefer.
  • Make sure to scrub the sweet potatoes clean, as you don’t want to be tucking into gritty potatoes.
  • I prefer to cook the sweet potatoes directly in the insert to avoid washing up, but feel free to cook them on a trivet if you prefer.
  • You’ll need to drain the cooking water from the Instant Pot sweet potatoes before mashing.

How Long Do You Pressure Cook Sweet Potatoes

This is going to depend entirely on the size of sweet potato chunks or slices you are cooking

Bigger chunks that are about 2 inch cubes will take about 12 minutes. Whilst smaller thinner disks will take about 10 minutes.

My suggestion is to start with 2 inch cubes and cook for 14 minutes. You can then increase or decrease the cook time depending on your preference.

It is very important that you do a quick pressure release after cooking the sweet potatoes. If you do a natural pressure release you will end up will very overcooked potatoes.

How Long Can You Store Gluten Free Sweet Potato Mash

I loooooove making Instant Pot Sweet Potato Mash for meal prep. Just follow the directions above, then let the sweet potato mash cool down completely before transferring it into an air tight container and storing in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Alternatively, you can portion the mash into freezer bags,  remove all the air, label them and freeze for up to 6 months.

How To Reheat Instant Pot Mashed Sweet Potato

One of the great things about this is that you can make the mash ahead of time and simply reheat when needed. Simple mix in a tablespoon of water to loosen it up and reheat in the microwave.

Mashed Sweet Potatoes Variations

You can flavor your Instant Pot Yams in many other ways. Here are just a few mix-in suggestions to try:

  • Spices like nutmeg, cardamom and allspice.
  • Dried herbs such as oregano, basil and parsley.
  • Cayenne pepper, or a dash of hot sauce for those who like some heat.
  • Date syrup, or honey if not vegan.
  • Coconut milk.
  • Sour cream or heavy whipping cream (if not vegan)

Topping Ideas

  • Crunchy toasted nuts (pecans and almonds are great choices)

  • A dusting of cinnamon
