Everyone was tired, hungry and in need of some super satisfying comfort food. And fast. So I opened the cupboard, pulled out a few essential ingredients (8 to be exact) and dumped them all into my trusty Instant Pot.

The result? This amaaaaazing recipe for Instant Pot Cheesy Garlic Butter Spaghetti.

Yeap, you can cook spaghetti in a pressure cooker. Whilst pasta has long been a mainstay of quick and easy cooking, the Instant Pot makes whipping up a tasty spaghetti dinner a whole lot faster and easier. Instant Pot Spaghetti served on a blue ceramic plate with a silver fork and cloth napkin

Tips for Making Instant Pot Pasta

  • When you first open there will be a bit more liquid, but if you mix and let stand for a bit the liquid will be absorbed.
  • And if you like your spaghetti with lots of sauce, add an extra half a cup of stock or cream.
  • Double or (even triple) the ingredients in this recipe to feed a crowd without having to adjust the cook time!
  • Feel free to sprinkle in even more Parmesan cheese, or add some grated mozzarella for extra cheesy goodness.

Can I Use A Different Kind of Pasta?

No spaghetti on hand? You can swap in the pasta noodles of your choice.

How Long To Cook Pasta in the Instant Pot?

You will get perfectly cooked pasta in the Instant Pot when you set it for 6 mins on manual high pressure. Then allow for a NPR of 6mins before releasing the remaining steam. Chef’s Tip: the cook time remains the same whether you are making 8 ounces, 16 ounces, or 24 ounces of pasta. Instant Pot Spaghetti served on a blue ceramic plate

Instant Pot Spaghetti with Sausage

To make Instant Pot spaghetti with sausage, set the Instant Pot to sauté mode, add a bit of oil or no-calorie cooking spray to the bottom of the insert, then add crumbled sausage. Once the sausage is browned, simply follow the rest of this recipe. Delicious!

Instant Pot Spaghetti Carbonara

For delectable carbonara style flavour, add some chopped bacon (like this Crispy Air Fryer Bacon) to your Instant Pot spaghetti before serving.

What is the Correct Instant Pot Pasta Water Ratio?

When cooking Instant Pot pasta, it is important to have the right amount of liquid. You need to make sure there is enough water to allow for the pressure to build, to fully cook the pasta and to make a sauce. I have found that it takes just about 3 cups of liquid to properly cook 8 ounces of Instant Pot pasta.

Recipe Note

A few readers contacted me saying the got the burn notice when they cooked with the cheese in the pot with the pasta. I use the older Instant Pot model to first make this recipe and have not had a problem making this. However, I have amended the recipe so that you add the cheese in after cooking the pasta. Happy eating!!!

I have made this recipe dozens of times as a side dish and it’s always a huge hit. It’s simple but so delicious. I love that you dump the ingredients into the pot, turn it on and it’s done! I cook for my toddler and mother every night and this is something that everyone enjoys.

  2. 4 stars
Tastes great, but it’s not creamy at all. I’ve made it twice and both times it seemed to be more oil than cream. Suggestions?

Thank you so much for this easy, simple, but tasty recipe! I’ve had my Instant Pot for years, but it’s been sitting in the garage since I bought it. My rice cooker finally kicked the bucket, and as I was about to buy a new one, I remembered about my Instant Pot. After mastering rice, I felt more confident with it and wanted to try actual food. This was the perfect first recipe for me and it came out great! I’m looking forward to following along with your other recipes, especially the African Recipes!

  4. Could you use any type of pasta as long as it’s 8oz? My family loved it but with little kids smaller pasta is easier for us 😉

  5. If you double the pasta – do you double the broth amounts as well? Does everything simply double?

  6. 5 stars
I made this yesterday and it came out so good, who knew cooking pasta in the instant pot could be so easy. Oddly enough I left out the heavy cream, I was going to use it but realized it had been in my fridge a little to long, usually only happens to my vegetables(best intentions). It still came out creamy and delicious. I will be keeping this recipe for rotation.

  7. An easy and tasty recipe for spring and summer time. For this kind of recipe i use spghetti, bucatini or linguine. It is also good with Italian extra virgin olive oil instead of butter.Keep it up!

  8. 5 stars
Made this as the recipe stands except I used 3 large fresh cloves of garlic minced. Came out perfect. So easy and flavorful. This will be a staple.

This recipe is a keeper! A delicious and quick meal. We added grilled chicken—in the future I think I’ll add some broccoli. Thank you for sharing!

I got a burn notice with this recipe, any suggestions for avoiding that? I added all the ingredients as listed and didn’t stir. Should I have stirred? Or sprayed the pot beforehand?

    1. Also, it still tasted delicious! I just turned off the pot, and after quick releasing, I cooked it on saute mode until the sauce reduced and the pasta was more tender.

  10. The recipesounds delicious however, my husband is a Celiac & like most that have to eat gluten free, they can not have any dairy products. Could i just add extra broth in lou of the cream. I know it won’t be creamy but what a saving just to cook it in my Instant Pot. Also would you say the time would be less for serving for 2

  11. 5 stars
Instead of oregano, I used a teaspoon of basil and also one teaspoon of Italian seasoning. I also used half-and-half instead of heavy cream which worked out nicely. My husband and children loved it!
Thanks so much for posting this!

I’ve never added cheese to a recipe that’s cooking but I thought Parmesan would be ok. It wasn’t. I got a burn warning and all the cheese was completely burned to the bottom. I had to dump it out, scrape it off for 20minutes then cook again but got another burn warning. Thankfully it was cooked the second time. But I had to scrape again. I also added cooked shrimp at the end with the bacon and we all thought it tasted excellent. Next tine I’ll be adding the cheese after it’s cooked.

    1. Wow Jennifer, making a 2 star review because you can’t read directions. It clearly stated not to add the cheese before cooking.John

  13. I bought the crockpot brand multicooker so it doesn’t have a manual setting. Would I use the rice function on high pressure? Making this in less than an hour for supper and just realized I don’t have a manual setting

    1. You can put it on soup or dessert and change the time and pressure depending on what you need

I’ve never thought of cooking spaghetti in the Instant Pot! It looks so easy and the thought of just cooking in one pot and opening it up to see your entire dinner in there is fantastic. I will def try this will some sausage on one of those hectic weeknights. (I’ve been where you’ve been with hungry kids and no dinner)

  16. I like that the nutional info is there ,but it doesn’t say for how much, 1 cup , 1/2 cup?
