How To Make Mummy Jalapeno Poppers

Get the complete ingredients list and instructions from the recipe card below.

  1. Preheat oven to 400F / 204C.
  2. Cut the jalapenos in half lengthwise and remove the seeds and ribs of the pepper.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the cream cheese, cheddar jack cheese, bacon, paprika, and garlic powder.
  4. Next, take about 1-2 tablespoons of the cream cheese mixture and fill each jalapeno.
  5. Roll out your crescent dough, pinching the perforation seams together as you go so it’s a large sheet of dough. Cut the dough into 20 strips.
  6. Take the dough strips and wrap them around the jalapenos. The dough will get thicker when baking, so make sure you leave space for the eyes when wrapping.
  7. Once all poppers are wrapped in dough, place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the poppers start to turn a golden brown.
  8. Take poppers out of the oven and insert two eye candies while the poppers are still hot.

Recipe Tips

  • You can leave the stem on the peppers or remove them. Leaving them on makes eating them a little easier.
  • Depending on the size of your peppers, you may end up with some leftover cheese mixture, which is fine.
  • To make cutting the 20 strips of dough easier and more symmetrical, cut the big sheet of dough in half lengthwise, cut those pieces in half lengthwise again, and then cut each of those 4 pieces into 5 long strips
  • Don’t wait for the mummies to cool before adding the eyes or they won’t stick.
  • Don’t overfill the poppers or they’ll ooze the cheese mixture out when baking.

Recipe Variations

These mummy poppers are fun to make as is, but you can also try some of these variations;

  • Swap the cheeses – instead of cheddar Jack cheese, use a 50/50 blend of sharp cheddar and Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack, Smoked cheddar, or even Gouda or Swiss.
  • Use different meat – no bacon? Use salami or diced ham instead.
  • Serve with toppings – serve with guacamole, sour cream, or diced tomatoes.

Prep Ahead And Storage

Jalapeno Bites are best served fresh from the oven but they can also be served at room temperature.

Prep Ahead – These aren’t hard to make, just take a little time to wrap. If you’re looking to prep ahead, they can be made up to 24 hours in advance and kept in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Pro Tip: If storing your cut dough in the fridge before baking, make sure to wrap the dough tightly in plastic wrap so it doesn’t dry out.

Store – Store baked poppers in an airtight container in the fridge for a day or two.

Freeze – If you want to freeze these stuffed poppers before baking them try these tips:

  • Line the stuffed peppers up in a freezer ziplock bag on a baking sheet and freeze for a few hours.
  • Once frozen, lift the bag upright and squeeze out all the extra air and seal the bags.
  • Label the bags and then lay them flat in the freezer.
  • Store in the freezer for 3 months.
  • Don’t add the dough strips until you’re ready to bake them.

Reheat- To reheat, try baking them for 10 minutes at 350F / 177C.

Meal Prep – You can easily double or triple this recipe for a bigger crowd. Even easier to get bigger batches done if the kiddos get involved.

FAQs

How Do You Prep Jalapenos To Use For Poppers?

Make sure to wash your hands before and after handling your poppers. In fact guys, I definitely recommend wearing gloves when handling and cutting your peppers.

Pro Tip: use a knife to slice the peppers, then use a serrated grapefruit spoon to easily remove the ribs and deseed the peppers.
