If you are looking for a real adventure, our tantalizing Sardine Sandwich is a unique brunch offering that promises to redefine your taste buds. Delicate mashed sardine fillets mingle with creamy mayonnaise, the subtle sweetness of red bell pepper, the sharpness of finely chopped red onion, and just a hint of kick from carefully measured chopped chili. The result? A sandwich that’s as flavorful as it is unique.

I absolutely loathed sardines when I was younger. I have been known to deliberately loose the key to the tinned food cupboard at my parent’s house to avoid having to eat sardines for just one week.  Even better, I remember swapping food in school – my sardine sandwiches for some dumplings. Any dumplings would do.

On a trip, I tried a sardine sandwich that changed my mind and my homemade sardine sandwich recipe has been a favorite ever since. It’s a bit spicy, wholly satisfying, and a departure from the brunch routine. Trust us, give sardines a chance in this sandwich, and you might discover a new favorite that adds a dash of excitement to your mornings.

Pro Tips

  • Mix the sardines, mayo, red bell pepper, red onion, chili, and lime juice thoroughly for an evenly distributed and flavorful filling.
  • Add chopped chili gradually, tasting as you go, to achieve the desired level of spiciness without overwhelming the other flavors.
  • Preheat the sandwich maker to medium-high for a crisp exterior and evenly cooked sandwich.
  • Divide the sardine filling equally among the rolls to ensure a consistent taste in every bite.
  • Cook with the lid closed to allow even heating, creating a crispy texture on the outside while maintaining a succulent interior.
  • Keep an eye on the sandwiches to avoid overcooking. The ideal time is 6-7 minutes until they achieve a golden-brown crispiness.
  • Enjoy the sandwiches right away for the best texture and flavor. The crispy exterior is key to the overall experience.
  • Explore different types of rolls for a varied experience, from crusty baguettes to soft brioche, enhancing the sandwich’s character.

Delicious Variations

  • Mediterranean – Add kalamata olives, feta cheese, and a sprinkle of oregano to infuse a Mediterranean flair to the sardine filling.
  • Add Avocado – Incorporate sliced ripe avocado for a creamy and mellow contrast, enhancing the overall richness of the sandwich.
  • Add Curry – Spice things up with a hint of curry powder or curry paste in the sardine mixture, offering an exotic and aromatic variation.
  • Add Fresh Herbs – Add a medley of fresh herbs such as dill, parsley, and chives to the filling for a burst of freshness and aromatic complexity.
  • Add More Flavor – Add chopped hard boiled eggs, dijon mustard, cucumbers, garlic, salt and pepper to enhance the taste of the sardine mixture. You can also layer the sandwich with crunchy greens.

Prep and Storage

  • Prep – Mash the sardines ahead of time and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This expedites the sandwich-making process.
  • Store – Store sardine filling separately from the rolls to maintain sandwich crispiness. Store the filling in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze – Freezing is not recommended.
  • Reheat – Reheat in the sandwich press or in the oven.
