What Is Steak Seasoning

This is an easy-to-whip-up DIY spice blend that uses a combination of spices and herbs you already own in your spice cupboard. This steak seasoning recipe is smoky, yet herby, with a hint of heat and delicious crunch from coriander seeds.

Best of all, it’s easy to adapt and adjust to your tastes, and you can make it in about 5 minutes!

Why Make This Recipe

  • It’s Customizable – Easily customize the ingredients to fit your tastes. Adjust the saltiness, and spiciness, or add even more flavor with herbs and spices of your choice.
  • It’s Fresh – If you don’t use spice blends frequently, they can lose their freshness. Making a spice blend at home allows you to make usable quantities so the flavor is at its peak.
  • It’s Diet and Allergy Friendly – If you have specific dietary restrictions or allergies, making your own steak seasoning ensures that you can tailor the blend to suit your needs. You can exclude certain ingredients or choose substitutes that are compatible with your dietary requirements.

Ingredient Notes

There are a few everyday ingredients in this DIY spice blend which include:

  • Salt – The texture of sea salt flakes works really well here. You could also use coarse kosher salt or Himalayan salt, but I don’t recommend regular table salt.
  • Black Pepper – Add freshly ground black pepper for the best flavor.
  • Smoked Paprika – Smoked paprika adds a smokey flavor. You can use regular paprika if you don’t want the smokiness.
  • Coriander Seeds – Crushed coriander is the key ingredient that adds flavor and crunch to this steak seasoning recipe. You can use ground coriander, but the texture will not be the same.
  • Garlic Powder – If using garlic salt, omit the added sea salt.
  • Onion Powder – You can substitute dried onion flakes.
  • Dried Thyme – Dried thyme for an herby flavor. You can substitute your favorite dried herbs such as oregano, rosemary, dill, parsley, and more.
  • Red Pepper – Crushed red pepper flakes add a bit of spiciness. Eliminate or adjust the amount to your preferences.

Expert Tips

  • Always use fresh ingredients for the best flavor. Opened herbs and spices should be replaced every 6 months or so.
  • Dried herbs will work better than fresh herbs for this recipe.
  • Don’t make more steak seasoning than you plan to use in a few months.
  • Double or triple the recipe depending on how often you use this. Give homemade spice blends as a gift.
  • Vary the ingredients and the measurements to your preference.
  • Omit the salt for a salt-free version.
  • Store in an airtight container such as a mason jar or a spice jar with a shaker top.

Delicious Variations

  • Add Sugar – Add a touch of brown sugar to add a bit of sweetness.
  • Add Coffee – A tablespoon or so of instant coffee adds a rich flavor.
  • Mix up the salt – You can use pink Himalayan salt or Kosher salt. Be sure to taste and adjust the amounts so the blend isn’t too spicy
  • Adjust the ingredient measurements – Feel free to add a teaspoon more or less of the ingredients to your taste. Add-ons I have used include dried parsley and dried dill. Delish!
  • Prepare a rub – Use as a rub and let sit for a few hours before cooking. It works great on steaks (of course), other meats, and fish.
  • Blend into a powder – Pour all of the ingredients into a spice grinder and then blend into a powder.
  • Make a paste – Blend the seasoning with a small amount of oil. Rub the mixture onto meat before cooking.

FAQS

How To Use Steak Seasoning

Sprinkle this simple steak seasoning blend directly over the meat or add to butter or oil to make a wet paste and rub on the meat. Grill or sear to the desired doneness. You can also use it on veggies, fish, and other meats.

How To Season Steak

For the best results, follow these tips to season steak:
• Let the steak sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before you cook it.
• Pat the steak dry before you season it.
• Add the seasoning just before cooking.
• Season the steak on both sides.
• The thicker the steak is, the more generous you should be with your seasoning so you have enough flavor in proportion to your meat.
• You can also lightly brush the steak with some oil before you season it.

How Much Seasoning To Use

If it is the first time you are using this, start with less than you think you need and add more to taste. I recommend you start with 1-2 tablespoons of seasoning for a recipe that serves 4 the first time and then adjust up or down to your taste.

How to Use For Edible Gifting

This easy blend makes for a super unique DIY gift. Mix up a couple of batches, decant into cute spice jars or mason jars, add a ribbon and a label and hand out to all your foodie friends.

  1. 5 stars
Thank you, love your recipe’s instructions. Very well explained. I am really excited to make this one with my sister.

  2. Looks like the question about the black pepper being listed twice with different amounts has not been answered. I would say that black pepper appearing twice is a mistake. In the largest photo of the spices above, there are only eight spices shown and only includes one pepper. I just eliminated the first listing of pepper as that amount seemed excessive, and used the 1 T ground black pepper.

  3. Confused. Recipe calls for 3 Tablespoons black pepper, then another Tablespoons of pepper.
