Ingredient Notes

  • Pineapple – Fresh pineapple has the best flavor and texture, although you can use canned pineapple in a pinch.
  • Oranges – Any variety of orange will work: navel, blood orange, even clementines if you use enough.
  • Mango – Fresh mango should be soft but not mushy.
  • Peaches – Like mangoes, ripe peaches have a color change to red as well as give off a peachy smell at the stem.
  • Mint – Fresh mint gives such a bright flavor and plays well with maple syrup and sweet fruits.
  • Maple Syrup — For a little added hint of sweetness.
  • Salt — Any salt will do, but the more unrefined salts like pink Himalayan or sea salt will retain valuable minerals.
  • Lime — The lime gives the dressing a bright and tangy flavor and compliments the sweetness of all the fruit. Fresh lime is highly recommended.

Step 2. Chop the mint and sprinkle it over the salad. Drizzle the maple syrup over the fruit, squeeze on some fresh lime juice, and sprinkle with salt. Toss gently to combine. Garnish with additional lime wedges.

Expert Tips

  • Make sure not to leave out the lime juice. This keeps the fruit from turning brown and adds a bright flavor. Use lemon if you prefer.
  • While canned fruit can be used, fresh fruit has a firmer texture, will last longer, and tastes much better. So, use fresh fruit if possible.
  • Fruits are especially notorious for being heavily laden with pesticides so if your budget allows, buy organic fruit. Your body will thank you!
  • For the best taste and freshness, chill the fruit salad in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. It allows the flavors to blend.
  • Sprinkle with nuts, seeds, or coconut flakes to add a crunchy texture and packed nutrition.
  • Serve the fruit salad as a standalone dish or pair it with yogurt, coconut whipped cream, or a scoop of sorbet for a delightful dessert option.

Delicious Variations

  • Add Your Favorite Fruits – You can swap any of the fruit salad ingredients for your favorite fruits or for those you have on hand.
  • Make it Spicy – Add chopped jalapeno or a sprinkle of crushed red pepper for a spicy kick.
  • Swap the Citrus – Use fresh lemon juice or fresh orange juice in place of the lime juice in the fruit salad dressing.

Prep And Storage

  • Prep Ahead – You can make fruit salad ahead of time and let the flavors meld in the fridge.
  • Store – Keep leftover fruit salad in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze – It’s not recommended to freeze this salad. It comes together quickly enough!

FAQs

Can I use canned fruit?

Yes, if you have canned fruit on hand you can use that. The flavor and texture of the salad may be a little different. Drain and rinse the fruit to make sure to remove the processed juice. Fresh fruit is best, but it can be done with canned fruit.

What herbs can I use instead of mint?

Basil or cilantro can add a fresh burst of flavor and aroma to your summer fruit salad. They will change the flavor so add a little bit at a time until you get the desired flavor.

Can I use sweeteners other than maple syrup?

You can use sweeteners like agave syrup instead of maple syrup. And those not following a vegan diet can replace the syrup with honey. You can also leave out additional sweeteners altogether and let the ripe fruit do the talking.
