Ingredients

  • 1.5 Liters (2 bottles) red wine
  • 1 cup (250ml) apple cider
  • 1 cup (250ml) orange juice
  • 1/4 cup (250g) maple syrup or to taste
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 8 cardamom pods split
  • 1 clementine sliced
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) brandy or rum, optional

Instructions

How To Make Spiced Wine on the Stovetop

  • Add all the ingredients except for the rum into a saucepan.
  • Heat until almost boiling, then simmer for about 5 minutes.
  • Switch off the heat and strain (if required) into a serving pitcher or punchbowl.
  • Mix in the rum (if using), add the citrus slices, and serve.

How To Make Spiced Wine in the Crockpot

  • Add all the ingredients (minus the clementine slices) in the slow cooker.
  • Heat on LOW for about 60-90 minutes until the wine is hot. Do not cook on high so you don’t cook out all the alcohol (if using). It will take about an hour for the mulled wine to get hot.
  • Switch off the heat and add in the clementine slices.
  • Let sit for a few minutes, strain and serve warm.

Notes

  • If you sweeten with maple syrup, use real maple syrup, not the imitation kind.
  • Do not boil the mixture or you will cook off all of the alcohol.
  • Feel free to use pre-packaged mulling spices to make this.
