Growing up in Sierra Leone, I spent my childhood climbing mango trees. So it is fitting that my favourite fruit of all time is the mango. But indulging in a fresh juicy mango at peak ripeness is not often feasible with my busy, on-the-go lifestyle. So to satisfy my mango cravings, I keep a supply of dried mango stocked and ready to snack on whenever the mood strikes.

And at this time of year as it gets warmer, I find myself planning more and more excursions. Long afternoon walks, working in the garden, and meeting up with friends for bonfires in the woods. When I am out and about this much, I want something healthy to keep me going. A healthy snack, yet one that is full of satisfying textures and flavours.

This recipe for Homemade Healthy Trail Mix ticks all the boxes. Savoury, sweet, crunchy, smooth. Healthy Trail Mix is a portable, good-for-you snack that is easy to eat wherever your adventures may take you.

How To Make Healthy Trail Mix

You will need:

  • Dried Mango – In my mind, this is the star of the trail mix show. The natural sweetness and exotic tropical flavour provides the perfect balance to the savoury ingredients. I use Preda Fair Trade Dried Mango by Forest Feast, which includes no added sugar, preservatives, or fillers.
  • Nuts – loaded with protein, fiber, and healthy fats, snacking on nuts helps you feel fuller longer and give you a sustained energy. I love the combination of smoked almonds and rich buttery cashews.
  • Sunflower Seeds – One of the top 10 sources for many nutrients, including Vitamin E, and have been shown to improve cholesterol levels. And they add a subtle nutty flavour and great texture to your trail mix.
  • Popcorn – high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, popcorn is one of the best sources of fiber. And it is so deliciously snackable, I will happily munch on it morning noon and night.
  • Dark Chocolate – not only does it taste amazing, it is packed with good-for-you antioxidants. Eaten in moderation, dark chocolate can even help to improve blood flow and lower blood pressure levels.

To make:

  • Simply combine all the ingredients together in a large bowl.
  • Serve immediately, or transfer to an airtight container.

  • 64 grams (1/2 cup) ‘Forest Feast Dried Mango cut into bite-size pieces
  • 128 grams (1 cup) Smoked Almonds
  • 128 grams (1 cup) Roasted Cashews
  • 64 grams (1/2 cup) Sunflower Seeds
  • 256 grams (2 cups) Popcorn popped

    Oh yes my eyes have been blessed! All my favorites in one..I am a trailmix junkie AND a popcorn junkie which at the movies I usually add raisinets to get the sweet and salty mix. This recipe right here though, it’s guilt free! I’m in love
