  • Budget-Friendly – Canned peas regularly go on sale, but are inexpensive to begin with, so they are a perfect low-cost side dish.
  • Customizable – Spice up sweet peas with butter, salt, pepper, and garlic, or follow other adaptations listed below so they don’t have that canned peas taste.
  • Quick – You can prepare these peas in less than 5 minutes. Goes great with Air Fryer Fish and Chips.
  • Flavorful – Enjoy tasty green peas without that canned peas taste.

Ingredient Notes

  • Peas – Look for small baby sweet peas. Larger sweet peas may not be as sweet. You can purchase regular or no-salt versions.
  • Water – Drain the water from the can and add fresh water to cook.
  • Butter – Use salted or unsalted butter. You may not need to add additional salt if using salted butter.
  • Salt and Pepper – Season to taste with kosher salt and freshly ground pepper.
  • Garlic Powder – You could substitute fresh garlic, but garlic powder has a milder taste. You can also use onion powder.

FAQs

Are Canned Peas Already Cooked?

Yes, canned peas are already cooked, so they just need to be warmed through. They heat pretty quickly, so avoid overcooking them.

Do I Need To Drain Canned Peas?

Draining canned peas will improve their overall flavor. The water in the can is often loaded with excess starch and salt, so a quick drain in a colander is helpful.

You will still need a bit of moisture to cook the peas, so we add back 3 tablespoons of fresh water. You can also rinse your peas, which gives you a clean slate.

Are Peas Good For You?

Green peas are an excellent source of zinc and vitamins A, B, C, and E and are packed with antioxidants. While canning slightly diminishes nutritional value, canned peas are still an excellent addition to a healthy diet.

How Long Do Canned Peas Last?

Canned peas can be stored in your pantry for 3-5 years. Stock up when they are on sale, so you always have peas on hand.

How Can I Serve Canned Peas?

Cook canned peas as a great side dish or serve the tasty baby peas over mashed potatoes or pasta, in a salad or add to other dishes.
