This traditional Jamaican Dessert is rich, amazingly spiced, moist and very popular throughout the Caribbean.

A word….. this Caribbean Sweet Potato Pudding is rich, so you want to serve smallish portion to start with. You can always serve up extra portions if needed.

Amazingly, this indulgent recipe is vegan and this version is also gluten free. But it’s also easy to make with regular flour if you prefer.

Jamaican Sweet Potato Pudding – Why You’ll Love It

Traditionally the sweet potatoes are grated using a box grater in this Sweet Potato Pudding.

But for me this recipe is allllll about easy cooking, so I tend to add the potatoes with the coconut milk into high powered blender and pureé.

Yeap, this makes life much, much easier, winning all round. But you can totally stick with the box grater if you prefer.

And usually this pudding will be topped with a little bit of a custard, but I find that it is sweet enough as it is, so I skip the custard. Try it as is and let me know what you think.

Jamaican Potato Pudding Recipe Tips

  • Make sure to use a sharp knife to chop the sweet potatoes in smallish chunks for easier blending.
  • You might have to blend in two batches and stop the blender and slightly move around the sweet potato pieces to make blending easier.
  • Feel free to omit the spices if you prefer.
  • The sweet potato firms up as it cools down.

A Word About Jamaican Sweet Potato……

This recipe is normally made with the white starchy Jamaican Sweet potatoes and therefore needs less flour.

However, I don’t always have access to these, so I use the more widely found orange sweet potatoes instead which are less starchy.

So, you would need to double the flour used (as I have done in this recipe) if using the orange sweet potatoes.

Jamaican Sweet Potato Pudding Recipe Variations

This recipe is really a great base recipe that you can customize any way you like.  I love ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg in this.

You have just got to decide if you want to keep it vegan or not. Some of the different spices and proteins you can add in include:

  • Mixed Spice
  • Allspice
  • Dried chopped fruit
  • Coconut sugar
  • Cardamom
