Cucumber Onion Salad – West African Style
In Sierra Leone, we call this chilli cucumber salad – gron soup. It is simply cucumbers marinated in lime, chilli and onions – and is as refreshing as it sounds. A summer go-to-salad with not a soup in sight.
Although this is similar to a mild pickle, everyone I know eats it just as is. It is a meal by itself. Especially popular in the colder months when we add even more chilli and make it spicy hot along with the woolly hats (yes we do have those in Sierra Leone too) and smokey teas.
What to Serve With Cucumber Salad Recipe
I definitely eat it just as is, mostly. But it rocks alongside some

You are bringing back memories Bintu!! I would love some of this now 🙂 With some bonga fish grinded in 😉
Hehehehe. I was thinking about the bonga fish and may do a verion with that in.
it sounds amazing. I’m not great with chilli, so I don’t think I would be adding more chilli in the winter months, but it does sound very tasty
You can easily omit the chili. All to your taste Barefoot.
this looks so yum might give this a go! 🙂 xo
😀
Oh my… I used to love this when I was a kid – I learned how to make it from our neighbour’s kid – it was kind of my specialty because no one in my family knew how to make it. I made it all the time… fun times!
Your folks must have loved you Elsa. yes fun, fun, fun times
That looks lovely. My gran used to do a variety of pickled cucumber salad that I loved, sadly I never got the recipe. Will have to try this.
Enjoy it Alison – so often I wish I had lots of recipes from my gran too.
Love this idea Bintu. Other than tzatziki and just adding them to salads and sandwiches, I’m never really sure what to do with cucumbers.
I know what you mean. we have quite a lot of cucumbers too so time to bring out the cucumber brains.
I would never have thought of that combo. It sounds great. Cooper just about eats his body weight in cucumber. He’s made about it.
Wow – lucky you to have a kid that likes cucumbers that much.
How ironic that you mention fish as an accompaniment because I was thinking that too! Interesting that it’s got the spice to it…I’m intrigued. Once again your photography is off the charts awesome, Bintu 🙂
I am blushing Mike……
I bet this is delicious, perfect for my homegrown cucumbers. GG
