This versatile appliance can cook a variety of foods to perfection, even from frozen, so it should be no surprise that you can do something as simple as boiling water in an Instant Pot. Yet, many people don’t realize how easy and FAST you can boil water in an Instant Pot. 

The secret of boiling water fast in the Instant Pot is that it traps the steam. Since steam can’t escape, the water can heat up much more quickly. But you can also boil water in an Instant Pot without the lid, which is perfect if you only need a cup or two. 

Perhaps you never thought about using an instant pot to boil water. I know I never did. But it adds to the versatility of this fantastic appliance and learning the techniques come in handy when I need boiling water in a hurry

There are many methods for boiling water, from using a kettle to boiling water on the stove to using an instant opt to boil water, and you may be wondering which kitchen appliances will boil water faster.

A kettle will be the fastest method but you are limited on the amount of water you can boil. And not everyone wants yet another appliance taking up counter space. Using the Instant Pot to boil water is a wise choice, especially when you already have one in your kitchen. You can boil small amounts of water quickly but also have the ability to boil larger amounts so it’s a win-win!

How To Boil Water In The Instant Pot Using Pressure Method

  1. Pour at least 1 cup of water into the Instant Pot inner pot.
  2. Place the lid on, turn the valve to the sealing position, and set it to manual pressure / high pressure for 5 minutes. 
  3. When done, perform a quick release of the pressure, then use the boiled water as needed.

How To Boil Water In An Instant Pot Using Sauté Function

  1. Pour 1 to 2 cups of water into the Instant Pot inner pot (Note: You do not need the Instant Pot lid for this).
  2. Set to Sauté mode. 
  3. The cooking time for the water to boil in the Instant pot without a lid is about 3 minutes.

Expert Tips 

  • Use the Instant Pot sauté function for small amounts of water, such as 1-2 cups. 
  • The Instant Pot sauté setting will run for 30 minutes before automatically switching to the keep warm mode. Watch closely, as small amounts of water can ultimately boil out. 
  • Add a steamer basket when using the Instant Pot sauté function, and you can use it for steaming vegetables while boiling water at the same time. 
  • For larger amounts of boiling water, use Instant Pot Pressure Mode. 
  • Don’t overfill the Instant Pot. Never fill the pot above the max fill line marked on the insert. 
  • Use a ladle to scoop out the boiling water.
  • You can carefully remove the insert from the Instant Pot to pour the boiling water. 
  • The cooking time does not include the time it takes for the Instant Pot to reach the pressure cooking function
  • You can let the pressure naturally release, but the water will cool down significantly during that time.

How Long Does It Take To Boil Water In Instant Pot?

It takes about 3 minutes to boil water using the sauté function. This will be more of a slow boil and will quickly reach the slow boil temperature of 205 degrees F / 96 degrees C.

You will see lots of bubbles along the top of the water. To boil water using the pressure function will take about 5 minutes plus the time for the unit to come up to pressure. 

Does An Instant Pot Boil Water Faster Than Electric Kettle?

An electric kettle can boil water very quickly. I prefer to have fewer appliances that serve many purposes, so the Instant Pot is a great substitute or replacement for an Electric Kettle. 

How To Boil Water In Instant Pot Without Lid?

Use the sauté function to boil water without a lid. This method works best for 1-2 cups of water.
