Ingredient Notes

  • Iceberg Lettuce—Crispy and cold, a head of iceberg lettuce makes the perfect bed for this wedge salad. If iceberg isn’t your favorite, you could use butter lettuce or romaine lettuce.
  • Blue Cheese Dressing—This recipe calls for blue cheese dressing, but you can use whatever dressing you like. Ranch, Thousand Island, or creamy Italian would all be great alternatives.
  • Bacon—Cooked and crumbled salty bacon adds a flavorful crunch to the salad. If you are short on time, use real bacon bits.
  • Chives—Fresh chives or green onions bump up the flavor of the salad.
  • Cherry Tomatoes—Quarter cherry tomatoes for a tangy and fresh addition to the salad.
  • Blue Cheese Crumbles—Crumbled blue cheese adds a bit more tangy creaminess and adds to the visual appeal of the salad.

Expert Tips

  • When looking for lettuce, choose a head of iceberg that feels heavy for its size with tightly packed leaves. Try not to get a head with wilted or loose leaves.
  • Chill the lettuce for at least an hour before slicing to make sure it is extra crispy.
  • Prepare your toppings ahead of time. This makes assembly super quick.
  • To keep the lettuce from wilting, wait to dress the salad until right before serving. You can also serve the dressing on the side.
  • Serve the salad immediately so as to keep the lettuce and toppings crisp.

Delicious Variations

  • BLT Wedge Salad—This variation adds the classic flavors of a BLT sandwich to the wedge salad. In addition to the traditional toppings, such as crispy bacon, cherry tomatoes, and red onion, add diced avocado and a drizzle of creamy ranch dressing.
  • Southwestern Wedge Salad—Add a Tex-Mex twist to your wedge salad by topping it with black beans, corn kernels, diced avocado, shredded cheddar cheese, and a cilantro-lime dressing. You can also add some diced jalapeños for extra heat.
  • Asian-Inspired Wedge Salad—Give your wedge salad an Asian flair by topping it with shredded carrots, sliced cucumbers, chopped peanuts or cashews, crispy wonton strips, and a sesame ginger dressing. Add grilled or shredded chicken for protein.

Prep And Storage

  • Prep Ahead—Prepare the toppings ahead of time and store in the fridge. Wait until serving to assemble and dress.
  • Store—The ingredients for the salad will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Once the salad is assembled, the lettuce will become soggy from the dressing.
  • Freeze—Freezing is not recommended.

FAQs

Can I use a different type of lettuce for a wedge salad?

While iceberg lettuce is the classic choice for a wedge salad due to its crisp texture and ability to hold toppings, you can experiment with other lettuce varieties if desired. However, keep in mind that the texture and presentation may differ.

How do I cut the lettuce into wedges?

To cut the lettuce into wedges, first remove any outer leaves and trim the core. Then, cut the head of lettuce into quarters, making sure each wedge has a portion of the core intact to hold the leaves together.

Can I customize a wedge salad to suit dietary restrictions or preferences?

Yes, you can customize a wedge salad by omitting or substituting ingredients to accommodate dietary restrictions or preferences. For example, you can make a vegan version by omitting the bacon and dressing and using plant-based alternatives. This salad is already gluten free.
