Homemade Apple Chips In The Oven
Don’t have an air fryer? Not to worry. Just follow these simple steps to make deliciously crispy apple chips in the oven:
- Preheat oven to 225 F / 110 C.
- Thinly slice the apples using either a mandolin or a sharp knife.
- Remove any seeds and add to bowl and combine with cinnamon.
- Arrange slices on a metal baking sheet.
- Bake for 45 – 60 minutes until apples are dried and edges curl up.
- Using a spatula, transfer these onto a wire rack until fully cooled and crispy.
Expert Tips
- Using a mandolin to slice the apples works best. Alternatively use a sharp knife.
- Don’t cut them tooooo thin, as they can then burn without actually crisping up.
- Try to make sure the apple slices are all the same thickness so they will cook at the same rate.
- If thickness varies, divide into batches according to thickness and cook similar size slices together.
- If some slices are cooking quicker than others, simply remove the quicker cooking ones earlier.
And even more tips…
- Note that your apple chips may not be fully crispy when done, but don’t fret. They will crisp upon cooling.
- Cook time will also depend on the thickness of your apple slices. If they are very thin they may cook a bit quicker..
- Air fryer temperatures can vary depending on the make and model, so this recipe includes a range of suggested cook times.
Delicious Variations
- Vary the spices – Use cardamom, nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice.
- Vary the crisp factor – make these crisper for snacking, but softer for topping granola.
- Vary the fruit – For a different flavour profile, follow this recipe and use pears instead of apples
Storing
Let them cool completely before storing in an airtight container at room temperature, they will stay good up to 7 – 9 days.
FAQ’s
What Type of Apples are Best for Making Apple Chips?
I made these using Braeburn apples, which have a nice crispness and subtle sweet flavour.
For an even sweeter treat, use Honeycrisp, Gala or Fuji apples.
And the Gravestein and Granny Smith varieties are great choices if you prefer your apple crisps a bit on the tart side. This is on of the most flexible air fryer apple recipes.
How To Reduce The Chance Of Burning
- Air Fryer Temperatures vary, so if your crisps are burning, try cooking them at a slightly lower temperature.
- Or you could cut the slices a little thicker.
- Removed cooked slices earlier than less cooked ones.
