Coloring Easter eggs is fun to do with the whole family. Food coloring can make your Easter eggs look beautiful, but using synthetic dyes comes with a rainbow of risks.

Natural dyed eggs are equally as beautiful and you don’t have to be concerned about handling the dye or eating the air fryer dyed Easter eggs (yes, you can use the air fryer!) that you worked so hard to create.

Turmeric egg dye is easy to make with ingredients you have in your pantry. The end result is beautiful natural dyed eggs in vibrant colors and shades of yellow. Plus you can make your air fryer hard boiled eggs while you prepare the dye to speed up the process.

After a fun afternoon of preparing natural dyes and coloring Easter eggs, you can use them to make beautiful Easter baskets or place them into an egg carton for display. After dyeing Easter eggs you can also use them to make deviled eggs for a tasty snack.

  1. Preheat your air fryer to  250 degrees F / 120 degrees C.
  2. Set a wire rack into the air fryer basket and place the eggs in a single layer on top.
  3. Cook for 16 minutes.
  4. Remove the eggs from the air fryer and plunge them into an ice water bath to halt the cooking process.
  5. Cool the eggs completely before dying.
  6. Bring 1 quart of water to boil in a pot large enough to hold all of your adds.
  7. Stir the turmeric into the boiling water.
  8. Once the turmeric has fully dissolved and the water has come to a boil (about ten minutes), remove it from the heat.
  9. Add the vinegar and stir to mix well.
  10. Allow the dye liquid to cool then add the eggs, ensuring they’re completely covered by the turmeric liquid.
  11. Soak the eggs in the dye until the desired color is reached. We left ours for 8 hours and dyed 12 at once in a large bowl.
  12. Lightly swish the Easter eggs in the liquid as you bring them out of the dye using a slotted spoon. This will prevent foam or bubbles from sticking to the eggs. Dry the eggs on a paper towel.

Pro Tips

  • Hard boil the eggs before dying. Raw eggs may break in the dye bath.
  • For more hard boiled eggs, you may need to cook the eggs in batches
  • No air fryer? No problem. We love how easy it is to make air fryer hard boiled eggs but you can cook the raw eggs using your favorite method
  • You will need one quart of water for every dozen eggs.
  • Turmeric eggs will dye pretty evenly but you can expect some speckles from the turmeric. It’s very pretty.
  • Dye eggs so they are completely submerged in dye
  • It’s important you use the right amount of white vinegar. Too little vinegar and the Easter eggs won’t hold the dye well. Too much, and the vinegar will start eating the shell of the egg.
  • You can dye your eggs for varying times from as little as 30 minutes to several hours or even overnight to reach the desired shade. Different dying times will create varying shades of yellow, from pale to deep gold. It’s fun to play with!
  • Make Easter egg designs on your eggs with a white or clear wax crayon before dying them in order to make shapes and pictures!
  • Gently wrap rubber bands around the eggs before adding to the dye to make line patterns.
  • Use a slotted spoon to lift the Easter egg out of the turmeric dye and dry them on a paper towel.
  • After your eggs have dried, gently rub the surface with a bit of vegetable oil to really make them shine.

Recipe Variations

  • Use Other Natural Dyes – The sky is the limit when it comes to finding sources for natural dyes. We love turmeric dyed Easter eggs, but here is a handy guide to a few of our favorite options to make more colors of dye liquid:
    • 2 Cups Purple Cabbage or Red Cabbage = Blue Easter Egg Dye
    • 2 Cups Red Onion Skins = Purple to Red Easter Egg Dye
    • 2 Cups Shredded Beets = Pink Easter Egg Dye

Prep And Storage

  • Prep Ahead – Both the dye and the eggs can be made in advance and kept in the fridge.
  • Store – Store unused eggs and dye in the fridge for up to a week. Eggs should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
  • Freeze – Freezing is not recommended.

FAQs

Can I Air Fry A Dozen Eggs?

This method to air fry hard boiled eggs will work for up to 6 eggs. If your air fryer will hold 12 eggs you will need to increase the cooking time by a few minutes to cook all of the eggs. You may need to cook eggs in batches.

How Long Does Turmeric Egg Dye Last?

The prepared dye will keep for several days in the fridge. You can make the dye in advance and dye the eggs when you are ready.

Should I Use White Eggs Or Brown Eggs?

You can naturally dye Easter eggs using white eggs or brown eggs. White eggs will be more vibrant while the colors will be more muted when using brown eggs. In either case, allowing the eggs to sit in the dye bath for longer periods will intensify the color of the hard boiled egg.
