Expert Tips

  • If you sweeten with maple syrup, use real maple syrup, not the imitation kind.
  • Do not boil the mixture or you will cook off all of the alcohol.
  • Feel free to use pre-packaged mulling spices to make this.

Delicious Variations

  • Make it with white wine – Although traditionally made with red wine, a dry white wine makes a lovely substitute.
  • Try different spices – Cinnamon, clove, and cardamom are the most common selections, but Star Anise is also a great addition.  Pieces of sliced ginger also add a lovely kick.
  • Swap the sweetener – Don’t have maple syrup on hand? Use honey, agave, or simple syrup.
  • Use different juice – Cranberry juice makes a festive and flavorful addition.

Meal Prep and Prep Ahead

Prep Ahead – The most challenging part of making this recipe is the time needed for heating. You may want to slice your citrus ahead of time, but everything else is just dump and go.

Store – Leftover wine can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat it on the stove or in a microwave-safe mug.

Freeze – Guess what? You can freeze this festive drink, and it makes incredible slushies! Here’s how to do it:

  • Prepare the wine and bring it to a boil to cook off any alcohol.
  • Pour the wine into ice cube trays and freeze.
  • Pop the cubes out of the tray and store them in a freezer-safe bag.
  • Toss the cubes into a blender and blend until slushy. (Hint: you may need to add a splash of water or fruit juice to get things going in the blender.)

FAQs

What is Spiced Wine?

Spiced wine is a warm drink commonly made by heating red wine with a variety of warm spices. Sometimes this glogg will have apple cider, citrus fruit, brandy, rum, or other liquor added to it.

Can I Make This Without Alcohol?

Not everyone enjoys drinking alcohol, or you may be looking for a family-friendly and kid-friendly beverage. To make a non-alcoholic version of mulled wine, simply replace the wine with grape juice, leave out the maple syrup, and skip stirring in the rum!
