Ingredient Notes

You just need a few ingredients you can easily get from a grocery store. Follow my tips on each ingredient for best results.

  • Okra – You need fresh okra for this. Choose ones that are fresh and green without any blemishes. I recommend small to medium sized okra, as large ones can be stringy.
  • Gluten free panko breadcrumbs – You can use gluten free regular bread crumbs or a non gluten free version.
  • Spices – I love using smoked paprika, dried oregano, ground coriander and salt. Okra needs a little more flavor than you think so feel free to add more spices to your taste.
  • Egg – You only need one large egg.

Bintu’s Tips and Variations

I really love switching things up in the kitchen. Here are some tips for easier cooking and variations for you to try if you want something a little different.

  • Leave space – Make sure to that there is enough space in between the okra when air frying so they crisp up. If needed, you can prep and cook the okra in batches.
  • Cut differently – You can halve the okra lengthwise or cut into little discs. I just want an easier life so I keep them whole.
  • Vary the seasoning – This is super versatile, and you can sub in different dried herbs and spices like basil, thyme, Cajun seasoning, red pepper flakes and Italian seasoning.
  • It’s important to note that air fryer temperatures can vary depending on the make and model. Depending on the size of your okra, cook for 5 – 6 minutes per side. If you want it crispier, add a few more minutes of cook time. I recommend starting with less time, check for doneness then add more time as needed.
  • No air fryer? – No problem! You can make this Crispy Roasted Okra instead.

I never tried okra until I moved to the south (Texas). Now it’s one of my favorites! I love that this allows you to have the crispy texture without deep frying.
