Chocolate Hummus. You read that right. If you are a chocoholic, this is a dreamy recipe. Creamy hummus with a gorgeous chocolate flavour accented by bits of dark chocolate in every bite. Definitely dreamy.

The idea for this dessert hummus came about as a leftover kind of thing. Leftover 85% dark chocolate bought from the local bakery plus leftover chickpeas from a spiced salad recipe I was trying out. And 4 attempts later I was hooked.

Chocolate Hummus – A Healthy Easter Treat

While this Chocolate Hummus recipe came about as a leftover thing, it also came about as a ‘what do I serve for Easter‘ thing. Peeps, if you want an Easter recipe that will wow your guests, this is it.

And the best part is it’s healthy. Yeap, a healthy Easter treat… almost too good to be true (but it’s not). Ready to learn just how easy it is to make this healthier dessert dip? Gather up your ingredients and I will show you…..

Chocolate Hummus Ingredients

There are only 7 ingredients in this fun dessert hummus, most of them are fridge or pantry staples.

  • Chickpeas: healthy and good for you.
  • Dark chocolate: totally beyond good for you.
  • Maple syrup: a little sweet goodness.
  • Creamy almond milk: a household favourite.
  • Almond butter and cinnamon: well they just rock.
  • Sea Salt flakes: amps up the taste.

How to Make Chocolate Hummus – Step-by-Step Tutorial

  1. Step 1. Add all the ingredients through to the cocoa powder into a high-powered food processor or blender making sure you add the wet ingredients first
  2. Step 2…….. and whiz for a minute. If using a blender, you will need to add an extra 3-4 tbsp milk to get the blender going. You will probably need to stop the whizzing halfway through to scrape down the sides of the blending or processor jar with a spatula before continuing.
  3. Step 3. Add in the chocolate pieces … and blend into the consistency you desire. If you want your hummus less thick then add in a bit more milk.

Dessert Hummus Recipe Tips

  • For a more chocolatey hummus, add an additional 1 tablespoon cocoa powder.
  • Vary the sweeteners. You can use date syrup or honey if you are not vegan.
  • Vary the additions – You can add in orange zest, vanilla extract, almond extract, berries, etc.
  • Double or triple the recipe for a big crowd. If you plan to serve a lot of guests, this is an easy recipe to make for a large crowd.

It’s best to make this recipe using an awesome high-powered food processor or blender. By using one, you avoid the whole ‘chickpea skins in my dessert hummus’ problem and the result is a very creamy sweet hummus. If you don’t have a high-powered food processor or blender, follow the ‘How to Peel Chickpeas’ section below.

Recipe variations

This recipe is awesome as is but fee free to add other ingredients to your taste.

  • Peanut butter lovers can use peanut butter instead of almond butter. Other nut butters and seed butters will work too.

Time saving shortcuts

  • Use store bought dark chocolate shaving to save some time on this dark treat.

FAQs

How to Eat Chocolate Hummus:

Serve with

  • strawberries and other berries
  • apple slices
  • slightly salty crackers
  • dried fruit ( I love it with soft dried apricots)
  • crusty white bread,
  • banana slices
  • waffles
  • french toast sticks
  • Air Fryer Muffins
  • maybe even cheese (if you’re feeling adventurous).

How Long Does Chocolate Hummus Last?

What a question, never more than 1.5 days in our house. However, you can keep it for 5 days in an airtight container in your refrigerator.

When And Where to Serve This:

Easter gatherings, children’s parties, grown-up parties, summer picnics and on your sofa with a spoon and a good book.

And all about chickpeas….

How to Peel Chickpeas

If you don’t have a high-powered food processor or blender, you can still avoid the chickpea skins problem by peeling your chickpeas. If you’re wondering how to peel chickpeas, just take them by the pointed end and give them a quick squeeze and they will pop out of their skin.

If you love chickpeas and aaaaaaaaaaaaall the hummus as much as we do then you can whip up a big batch using dried chickpeas and your Instant Pot. Just check out how in this Instant Pot Chickpeas post.

Then portion out the chickpeas in the right amount needed, add them to ziplock bags, remove the air, close and freeze them till needed.
