Ingredient Notes

  • Frozen Fish Fillets – Frozen fillets come in many varieties. You can purchase Tilapia, frozen cod, haddock, and more from the grocery store. Fish fillets also come in many different sizes. This also uses frozen breaded fish fillets. Our favorite is to make Air fryer Frozen Cod. See our instructions below for determining how long to cook your fillets.
  • Battered vs. Breaded – While you can cook both frozen battered fish and frozen breaded fish fillets, in the same manner, the battered fillets will get much crispier in the air fryer.
  • Oil – For extra crispy fish in air fryer, be sure to spray them with cooking oil like olive oil, avocado oil, or a low-calorie cooking spray before air frying.

Pro Tips

  • Do not defrost the white fish fillets. Go directly from the freezer to the air fryer.
  • If your fish is dry after cooking, squeeze lemon juice over the fillets. It adds moisture and flavor.
  • Your first batch will be sort of a “test” run. Adjust time and temperature based on the size of your favorite frozen fish fillets.
  • Turn the frozen fish fillet halfway through cooking. This will help the fish fillets to cook all the way through and be crispy on both sides.
  • Using cooking spray or olive oil helps prevent sticking and helps it crisp up.
  • If your air fryer is small, you may need to cook in batches. Everyone can start on their first piece of fish while the second piece cooks.
  • Remember that air fryer temperatures vary depending on the make and model. so use the cooking times listed as a guide, check for doneness, and adjust as needed.

Delicious Variations

  • Try Different Types of Fish – Fish filets are made with different types of fish. Although most white fish is mild in flavor, different fish will have a slightly different flavor.
  • Try Different Coatings – Frozen fish fillets may be breaded or battered. There are even beer battered fish fillets. Choose a flavor you know your family will love or experiment with different kinds.
  • Add Seasoning – After cooking, while the fish is still hot, sprinkle with your favorite seasoning blend for added flavor.

Prep Ahead and Storage

  • Prep Ahead – The beauty of cooking frozen fish in air fryer is that no advance prep work is needed! Go from freezer to table in less than 15 minutes.
  • Store – Leftover fish fillets can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge, but should be consumed within 2 days.
  • Freeze – Do not refreeze frozen fish after it has been cooked.
  • Reheat – Reheat your leftover fish fillet in the air fryer. Cook at the same temperature for 2-3 minutes per side. Spray the fish with oil to keep it from drying out.

FAQs

How Long To Cook Frozen Fish In Air Fryer?

How long to cook frozen fish in air fryer depends on a few things. First, frozen fish fillets come in different sizes, so you will want to take note the first time you make your favorite brand as to which cooking time works best. Here is a general cooking times guide:

Small fillets – About 8 minutes.
Medium fillets – About 10-12 minutes.
Large (or thick) fillets – About 12-14 minutes.

Are Frozen Fish Fillets Precooked?

You will need to check the packaging to determine whether the frozen fish fillets precooked or not. Many brands of frozen fish fillets contain raw fish, so it’s important to make sure they are cooked through before serving.

If you are using a precooked fillet, you may need to adjust the cooking time to prevent the fish from drying out.

Is Cooking Frozen Fish in The Air Fryer Healthier Than Deep-Frying?

Cooking frozen fish in the air fryer is healthier than deep-frying because air fryers use hot air circulation to cook the food, which reduces the need for large amounts of oil. This means you can achieve that crispy texture without the excess fat and calories associated with deep-frying.
