Why Make This Recipe

  • Healthy – Kale chips air fryer is much healthier than regular potato chips.
  • Easy – These chips are one of the easiest recipes you can make in your air fryer and they are done in less then 5 minutes.
  • Make A Little Make A Lot – You can make a small batch as needed or make several batches so you have enough for the week or enough to serve a crowd.
  • Better Than Storebought – If you’ve tried storebought kale chips and were unimpressed give this homemade version a try. The difference is noticeable.

Ingredient Notes

  • Kale – Use any kind of kale, but buy in bunches rather than precut.
  • Salt – Don’t overdo it. A light sprinkle of kosher or sea salt will enhance the flavor of the kale chips in air fryer.
  • Oil – A light spritz of oil or cooking spray will help the seasoning to stick and get the kale nice and crispy.

How To Make Air Fryer Kale Chips

Get the complete ingredients list and instructions from the recipe card below.

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 375F / 190C.
  2. Wash, dry and tear the kale.
  3. Add the kale in air fryer basket, only filling about halfway. Spritz with oil and sprinkle with salt.
  4. Air fry in batches for 4-6 minutes, shaking a couple of times during cooking.  Kale chips can burn quickly so it’s important check frequently for doneness beginning at the 3-minute mark.

Air fryer temperatures can vary depending on the make and model. I recommend starting with less cook time, checking for doneness, then adding more time as needed.

How To Prep Kale For Chips

  • Like many greens, kale can hold dirt so you will want to carefully wash and dry your kale leaves.
  • Next, remove the tough stems by cutting the leaves from the stems with a paring knife, or grip the stem in your fist and slide your fist down the stem to pull off the leaves.
  • The leaves can then be chopped or torn into small chip-sized pieces.

Expert Tips

  1. Thoroughly wash and dry the kale before proceeding with the recipe.
  2. For a more even coating of the seasoning, toss the kale with the oil and salt to coat well before adding it to the air fryer basket.
  3. Don’t crowd the basket with too much kale or it will crisp unevenly.
  4. Cover the kale with an extra air fryer rack to prevent it from flying around inside the air fryer.
  5. To re-crisp leftover kale chips, reheat them in the air fryer for 1-2 minutes.

Delicious Variations

  • Nutritional Yeast – This can add a slightly cheesy flavor to the chips.
  • Pepper – Sprinkle a little black pepper, cayenne, or even red pepper flake for spicy kale chips.
  • Ranch Flavor – Season chips with powdered ranch seasoning.
  • Doritos Flavor  – Combine 2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast, ¼ teaspoon onion powder, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon paprika, ¼ teaspoon chili powder and ¼ teaspoon salt. Sprinkle over the kale before air frying.
  • Cinnamon Sugar – Combine cinnamon, sugar and salt to season the kale chips.
  • Taco Flavor – Sprinkle with your favorite taco seasoning powder.
  • Everything Bagel– Sprinkle with an Everything Bagel seasoning blend.

Prep And Storage

  • Prep Ahead – Wash, dry and de stem the kale when you bring it home from the store so it will be ready to use.
  • Store – Kale chips can last about 5-7 days if stored in a brown paper bag or a loosely sealed zip top bag with a paper towel inside. Keep at room temperature.
  • Freeze – Freezing or refrigerating kale chips will make them soggy, so I don’t recommend this.

FAQs

Can I Eliminate The Oil?

Yes. Although we don’t use more than a spritz to help the seasoning to stick to the kale and add a little crispiness, you can eliminate the oil. The seasoning may not be as noticeable on the finished air fryer kale chips.

Are Kale Chips Healthy?

Kale is loaded with vitamins and minerals and can help lower cholesterol.

Why Are My Kale Chips Soggy?

Did you use too much oil? Did you pull them out of the air fryer too soon? Both of these things can lead to soggy chips.

How Do I Keep Kale Chips Crispy?

Don’t refrigerate cooked kale chips. Store them in a brown paper bag or in a loosely closed zip-top bag with a paper towel on the counter.
